Syria

OK - latest news from the Consul's mouth.

Even with letter from British Embassy (which is NOT special request or recommendation - they don't do that any more) the Syrian Embassy in Cairo will not issue visas to any nationality not resident in Egypt. No ifs no buts, no exceptions.

Someone from the British Consul is working on them for me, but it looks like this is a final decision. Possibly the next step from the reduction-of-visa-length problem of a few weeks ago?

So, am stuck in Cairo. For the time being.

cant you get one in Amman, Jordan?

POB/London 20 Jul 2004 17:42

That's the next step, although I think not.

chris 20 Jul 2004 20:45

as far as i'm aware there is NO syrian embassy in jordan.

maybe, courier your passport to a friend in the uk who can get you your visa in london and then courier it back to you?

good luck,
cheers chris

egypt is a spectacular country to see by bike. I spent 5 weeks in dahab on the sinai. great place.

also went off road between dhakla and luxor - nice trip. and the western desert is amazing

dont be in a rush to leave. send PP to london and tour while you wait

ps try and see the egyptians as 'lovable thieves' - expect the worse hope for the best.

they are programmed that way, you cant change them.

Hi Karim
did you need a permission for Dakhla - Luxor?
Where did you get it?
Thanks for your infos
Ursula

The Dakhla > Luxor trip sounds interesting. Tell me, did you both go via Kharga, or totally off-piste further north? I only ask because there is a new tar road that links all of those places, and I don't want to take it. If either of you have any GPS waypoints you could email me, that would be fab.

Karim - Red Sea coast is next week; really loking forward to it!

Be aware to be without passport in Egypt as whereever u travel there are police checkes and they want to see your passport, so if u send it u wont be able to travel around. I am in Egpyt now and had to show my passport 4 time in 4 different check points from Dahab to St. Katerina (mt. Sinai) ..
Safe travels
Mauro

Yup -

Dakhla to Luxor was a record-breaking 7 times!

Cross into Jordan near Aqaba, taking care not to get an Israeli stamp in your passport (seperate sheet of paper)and drive up to the Syrian border to try and get a visa there or,they will tell you how ie;in Amman.there must be a way for a visa into Syria from Jordan as it is a hugely used crossing.

POB/London 2 Aug 2004 19:37

OK, this is my new and revised plan.

Use already-started visa to enter Jordan. Ask people (police? travel agents?) how to get visa in thh country. I am pretty certain that Jordanians need no visa so this may be more complex than it seems...

Drive north to border - about 400km - and ask, possibly also asking about any special fees, etc (wink, wink). If they say no, go back to Egypt. It will be my only choice. Only problem is time dribbling away and the clearance of the bike from Nuweiba, as well as tehn finding ferry to Europe.

Well, there IS a syrian embassy in Jordan (although it is NOT at the place that is noted in the Lonely Planet map, it is a bit further from downtown amman... <-- ask police)... I am not sure though that you can get a visa there.
