Saiq Jebel Akhdar Oman

Hi there

Do you still neet a military pass to drive to Saiq or the Jebel Akhdar hotel on the Jebel Akhdar in Oman?

No you don`t, you just have to show passport etc at the check point. It is now a 3 lane highway, 2 lanes up, 1 lane down. From what I hear it used to be a good drive, not nowdays, I drove up there this September just gone.

Thanks Colin - will be up there in the coming summer for six weeks so useful to know.

I drove up there with my parents and some friends that were in the military in about 1992/3. My dad's brakes set on fire on the way back down  (I wasn't old enought to drive then so not my fault!). Must have changed a lot with the hotel etc now

Camping up there in the middle of summer is also nice, we camped in the 1st week of september when the temp in Dubai was still high 40s and high humidity, but camping anywhere in the mountains around Oman was very pleasant, low 20s at night, as I think the lowest altitude we camp around the was about 6000ft.

We're going for six weeks, I don't fancy camping for that length of time...I think we'll be in a B&B in Nizwa.

When you say driving I presume you're taking a car. Motorcycles weren't allowed up the road and were turned around at the military checkpoint when I was there about 9 months ago. Also, cars had to be 4WD. The road is sealed and fine - the 4WD touts at the checkpoint made me suspicious about the motives of this strange rule.

I am taking a 4wd Brett, but thanks for letting me know anyway!

Motorbikes are still not allowed up Jebel Akhdar. Three of us were refused permission this weekend. Apparently, and I'm quoting the officer at the checkpoint, "the Bedu don't like their goats scared".

Jebel Shams has a graded road right to the top. It's rutted, dusted and stony but can be done with a road bike if you're careful.
