No motorcycles allowed in Jordan without prior permission

We wanted to enter Jordan yesterday from Israel and got a paper at the border from the Israel staff that said no motorcycles are allowed into Jordan without prior authorisation at least two week before the time.

Richard-NL 22 Oct 2012 18:47

At which border are you trying to enter Jordan?

achim-in-jordan 22 Oct 2012 19:25

Dear Michnus,

If I read your mail correctly, the problem was on the Israeli side. Is that correct? I would be surprised if the problem had been on the Jordanian side: Many bikers have crossed Jordan, either coming from Syria or from Egypt without any problems. And which border did you try to cross? Allenby (King Hussein on the Jordanian side) is very different from the Northern Border (Sheikh Hussein) or the Elat - Aqaba crossing!

Best
Achim

We wanted to get in to Jordan from Newiba in Egypt via ferry. Then spoke to people and it is way cheaper going through Taba into Israel and then cross into Jordan.
We stopped at the Hussein border post and got issued with a paper stating that no motorcycles are allowed in to Jordan. That was still on the Israel side.

We did not even get through the first gates. The security people said its been like that for a while. And if we wanted to enter Jordan we had to ask permission 2 weeks in advance.

Needless to say we rode up now to the Dead sea and will miss Petra and Wadi Rum. a Tour operator in Eilat tried to arrange for us but he could not manage.

We really are a bit sad that we will not see Jordan now.

achim-in-jordan 23 Oct 2012 13:15

Hi Michnus,

That is indeed very sad! Motorcycles are allowed in Jordan, nowadays even for locals. I have had a few of them coming through here and I know of at least one German biker who crossed the border between Aqaba and Elat (so in the opposite direction) without any problems (except that the Israelis buried the bike in the inspection pit )!

Greetings,
Achim

It is a Jordanian issue

I meet here at Ein Gedi - Dead sea, all those poeple trying to cross the border from Egypt-Eilat_Akaba. The Jordenians do not allow them to cross : one bike if not with an orgenaized group , or papers not fixed ahead. The Israelies do them all a favore, telling them the problem when still at this side. Then they have no choise but crossing Israel (here i do meet them) and take the ferry to Cyprus or Greece. (i have the details ). David

Are solo motorcycles still forbidden to enter Jordan??? Do you know if the same rule applies to every border post or just to Eilat - Aqaba border?

If they are still forbidden, do you know where I should apply for that permission?

Anymore news on this?

Oh, it seems it's not a problem anymore, happily! I used my carnet and entered without an issue from Eilat to Aqaba. You have to buy a specific insurance for Jordan (about 20 JD for a month) and you have to pay even for the stamp on your carnet (about 30 JD!)! There is an exchange office on spot.

Keep in mind that rules changed and the visa is not free anymore at that border. You must pay the full amount of 50 JD, if I remember well. If you spend more that 3 days or something in Jordan and you exit from the same border, you'll get the visa fee back. Anyway, the Jordan Pass is a good deal but you need to arrange it online beforehand;-)

Jordan Pass

Enjoy Jordan and its wonderful people!

Any chance on a TIP instead of a carnet?

I'm not sure about that... However, it's written that a carnet is not necessary at:
Overlanding Association

I've read that it's recommended for Jordan elsewhere. But I agree that there is some uncertainty there.

Yeah, I know what you mean... That's what I did: Egypt - Israel - Jordan, back to Israel - Palestine and ferry-boat to Greece. The news are not so great, though... It's still forbidden to cross the bloody Suez Canal on a motorbike. I was struggling a whole month in Cairo and I couldn't secure a special permit. I only succeeded the last moment thanks to some connections! Egypt is hard for overlanders anyway but if you are there, maybe you'll find a way. I know other motorcyclists who did too.

My whole story about Egypt is at:

I'm planning the same. Leaving next May. What are your plans with Egypt? I think I'll pass but really want to ride Jordan and Israel.
