Motorcycle Licence - Dubai

Hi all,

Thanks to some helpful posts on here I've pretty much worked out the process and what's required when registering your bike in Dubai. One query though........

Does the UAE have a similar system to the UK where you can just apply for a sole motorcycle licence or do they have a system in place where you must have a full car licence first? Silly question to those in the know, but would be good to know.

Also what's the average price of insurance out there? Fully comp.

Cheers all.

Jon.

Jon,
I'm not sure if you mean taking a bike test here or having a UK licence transferred to a UAE one. The latter is (usually) straightforward.

It's very hard to get fully comprehensive insurance for a bike here unless you buy it new or very recent secondhand. Having a car already insured with Axa or Royal Sun Alliance helps. The going rate is 6.5-7% of the value so buying a brand spanking new GS, for example, would be expensive to insure...

Hi Stephano,

Thanks for replying. I have a full UK motorcycle licence, so hopefully it'll be straight forward minus the usual UAE red tape.

Please, please tell me they have at least third party fire & theft?!!!!

It's fully comp or third party only with no theft cover, I'm afraid. Have you got a dog?

Just powerful friends and baseball bat.

May have to leave it behind and buy a KTM or similar when I'm out there.

Are there any local bike forums you can suggest. Am keen to get involved in meets etc.

Don't be silly... buy a Honda.

Try these:
Dubai Petrolheads

UAERide
Any other questions, feel free to ask but I'm on the road so there might be a delay in the reply.

Never - a swear word in my book. Will cringe when you see me suffering on the side of the road with heatstroke!

Cheers for the forums, Stephano. Appreciate the help, fella.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
