Last year it wasn't necessary but temporary import tax was expensive !!

I was in Lebanon few months ago. I used CdP but it is possible to go in without it. The insurance is really expensive. It should be for the whole year and is about 65 $. Visa for 48 hours is for free.

Lebanon has the dirtiest and most chaotic roads I´ve ever seen. Beirut is all new, the beach is Ok, but it is really expensive city because is a tourist place for Gulf Arabs.

Worth to see: Baalbek roma ruins, but that is Hizbolla territory, no problem for tourists but I couldn´t forget about human bombs.

In general, I didn´t find Lebanon as friendly as Syria or Jordan.

Has anyone been to Lebanon 2009/2010? If so, what were the expenses to enter. Lonely Planet says that there is a hefty charge is you bring your own vehicle into Lebanon. Anyone have got lately any experience about this?

Have to agree with Miquel. I haven't been, ever, but all my research has been recent. I called the Lebanese embassy in my country (Canada), and spoke with them. No carnet is needed for any of those 3 countries. Lebanon seems to have the most expensive entries from all angles - temp import tax, and insurance.

I initially read on their site that the visitor visa is free for up to a month, but other reports on the forums have indicated otherwise. Perhaps just border guards trying to shake you down for a few more... Maybe you could try and get out of paying for the visitor visa who knows.

I am personally considering cutting out Lebanon out of my middle east tour for 2011. Seems like it has the least positive reports from people here, and is one more border crossing. I do went to see Beirut, so maybe just a side trip without the bike...

Hello Miquel,
Would you be kind to explain how long did you stay in Lebanon?
Did you leave the country from the same border you have entered?
Beside 65USD tax were there any other taxes?

Regards

Hi,

I am living in Beirut since 2008. And it makes things much easier with the Carnet de passage. I never had problems to cross the border until I told them that I am resident. Since then I have to go to the Headquarters of the Customers every six month to extend the permit. After two years however you have to pay taxes etc.

Insurance costs around LBP 60,000 (USD 40) per year.

If you are in Beirut, let me know.

All the best
Lalli
