Well my bike was supposed to be shipped tomorrow to Dubai and then being ridden back via Iran but I've just got my Carnet quote back and it's £4520 and I only get back £1987.50 upon return of the carnet!!!!!So to travel from UAE and Iran it would have cost me £2532.50 What an absolute rip off. Well that's cancelled all of my plans, Typical insurance companies trying to make money for nothing.:nono::censored: It'll just be Europe than I guess

Which automobile association did you go through?

RAC as that was the only one who did it as far as I was aware.There was a German accosiation but they will only do then from German registered vehicles now

Hmmm... I was going to suggest the RAC if you had tried a different association (I wasn't sure where you were posting from and the RAC tend not to worry too much about where your vehicle is registered) as they tend to be a little cheaper than the others.

Too bad it has come out so high. It is getting more and more expensive every year for my clients to get a Carnet for Iran.

I just think it's ridiculas,why would I take my bike and leave it there,as from what I believe that is all the insurance is for? I thought it was to pay any import duty in the case I didn't bring the vehicle back. So :censored:off

You guys have just reminded me that there are some pretty serious/onerous international sanctions in place nowadays for Iran.

Perhaps that has influenced the pricing of this Carnet?
On the other hand, you could speculate that really strict sanctions would result in CdPs for Iran being refused altogether.

Does anyone know if you can get one cheaper? e.g. mark the price of your bike/car down a lot,I put mine down as £7500 as that is what it's worth but if I put,lets say £1000 then it should make it a lot cheaper or do the RAC check?

That "ruse" has been discussed in other threads about CdP.
The understanding of that forum (trip paperwork) was that the issuing authority use the published market value of the bike/car.
Therefore, there is not much scope for playing down the valuation.

Temporaray Import Permits (TIPs) are an alternative, obtained country by country.
There is recent discussion in here, right now, about doing this on the border of Iran, but most folks consider this to be a poor option compared with a Carnet.

Have you looked into getting one in the UAE ?

i'm not sure whether this is possible with a foreign registered bike, but perhaps you could e-mail the Auto and Tourist Club UAE and ask the question.

I got one last year to ride back from Abu Dhabi through Iran, Iraq, etc, and although i had to leave a 35k Dirham (not negotiable), deposit with them, i got all of that back via bank transfer when i sent the CdP back to them some months later. I'm afraid that i cannot remember what i actually had to pay for the issue of the thing, but it was not much. My documents are all back in the UK at the moment (and i'm in China), so i cannot check them now, but i should be back in mid February, so PM me if you want me to check the cost then.

ow wow, thats a lot. What bike do you have? That's scared me a bit now. I'm waiting for my quote as we speak, and listed the AfTwin as £2200... hope they agree...

I ride a 2008 BMW R1200GS valued at £7500. Your's should only be about £1000 and you should get about half back upon surrend of the carnet

I've abandonded the ttrip now and going to ride down to Morroco instead. I did find out that I could have laid £37500 down and got it all back but if the bike was stolen or I had the carnet stolen I'd struggle to the the £37.5K back
