Hi Omar,
How do you plan to do Libya? Do you have to have an escort on a bike?
I did hear that if you go the coast road on a bike you don't need the escort. Is that true?
I have been looking at going from Saudi through Egypt,Libya,Tunisia ferry to Italy,France then England. Not sure when, depends on my contract.
Cheers

On the 13th of July I'm leaving from Marseille to Tunis on my ktm and I should arrive in Alexandria around the 20th of July. I've half of my family living there and in Cairo. I would be happy to meet you or to help you with the French part of your trip.

Yes I got relatives in Alex and Cairo, that's cool indeed!

In France I live in Toulouse, South.

About the ferry I paid 300euros for a one-way trip from Marseille to Tunis. One person, one bike, no cabin. Pretty expensive as you said... When you'll know the date you want to take the ferry let me know and I'll give a call to the boats company to get a price for you. My email is aurelienDOTkamelATfreeDOTfr

Dessertstrom, about the transit visa for Libya I saw so many guys asking how to get it, saying it was difficult, etc. But actually it was pretty easy to get the visa at the Libyan consulate in France. I just sent a fax of my passport, a letter telling them my plans for crossing Libya (entry border, exit border, approx date, etc) and 60euros and I should get it next week.

Dessertstrom 10 Jun 2008 07:12

Hi Omar and Aurel,
Thanks, the company I work for have brokers that sort out all the visas so I would have them all before I set off.
My main concern is having to pay for an escort and stay together to cross Libya, this is the only thing that would put me off and I would then go the other way through Jordan,Syria and Turkey.
I am planning on this time next year subject to my contract.
Cheers

The visa I was talking about for Libya is a "transit visa". I won't need a guide next month to cross Libya. I just have 7 days maximum to spend in Libya without leaving the coast. But that was really easy to get it...

Dessertstrom 10 Jun 2008 11:39

Aurel,
Indeed, I only need transit visas as it will be a ride home not a sight seeing trip, only the sights that I pass on the road.
The question is-- for Libya do you have to have an escort even if you don't want one?
Did they tell you that you won't need an escort as opposed to a guide?
Do you have to go the coast road if you don't have an escort?
I will try the Libyan Embassy again, no answer last time I asked.
Cheers

I checked again and again with the guy of the consulate just to be sure (ask the consulate, not the embassy) and :
- I will travel ALONE, NO guide, NO escort, just me and my bike
- I will have 7 days to cross Libya
- I will be in trouble if I don't stay along the coast
- I CAN'T exit Libya where I entered it. That's a "transit visa", only for crossing Libya. The guy told they would be really suspicious if I was exiting Libya where I entered.

A passport, a letter describing your trip, 60euros, and that's all.

I hope that helps.

That's Great

Thanks Aurel,
That's good news, I can get by with Arabic then it's Italian then French, not as many languages to mess up going this way and the mediterranian coast to follow.:mchappy:
Thanks again.

Got a call from the Libyan consulate in Marseille (France) this morning, my transit visa has been accepted! (maybe sometimes it's not...)

Sergiobodyweb 14 Jun 2008 00:52

Since I would like to have the same ride do you think I may enter in :
Egypt ? Syria ? Jordan ?

Please consider that :
I'm italian and I travel in a bike with my american wife.

We would like to come from Greece, Turkey, then down to Egypt, if possible of course.

aurel 14 Jun 2008 01:41

Just ask for your visas, you'll see if you get a positive answer or not. If you don't have an Israel visa on your passport it should be fine for the whole tour.
