Dubai to Amsterdam –April 2014
Hello Everybody,
We are 3 Guys planning for a motorcycle trip from Dubai to Amsterdam this April. Our plan is to do it in 3 weeks and we will be passing through these countries: Iran, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Russia (Moscow), Belarus, Poland , Germany, Netherlands. I have done a similar trip in 2007 from Dubai to Barcelona through Saudi & Turkey this why I wanted to try a different route through Russia this time. All bikes will be shipped back once we reach our destination. (Yamaha Diversion 900-XJR1200). I live in Tbilisi, Georgia and will comment on the plan to ride from Georgia to Moscow.
The only route possible bike route to get to Moscow from Georgia is to go via Gudauri / Kazbegi and up through Vladikavkaz and this is over a high mountain pass. The road is plowed and OK for automobiles year round, but if past years are any indication, you should expect to encounter snow and cold in April. It is usually well into May before I can ride up to Kazbegi. An alternate route would be to travel via Tbilisi to Batumi and through Turkey - again a mountain pass but there is the Roki tunnel and it is possible to ride that route earlier than your proposed route. Having lived in Moscow for many years, do think April is rather early to be riding in that region and again, a southern route might be a better option. |

The ride north of Tbilisi - count on an hour to get to Annanuri - a very nice fortress / church over-looking a dam; then another easy hour to get to Gudauri where you can get fuel at the Wissol station; about 40 minutes to reach Kazbegi if there is no snow and the road is clear. Last year the stretch from Gudauri to Kazbegi was repaired and is much better. From Kazbegi it is a few minutes to the border and the border takes anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour and a half - most time is spent on the Russian side. From there, allow an hour to reach Vladikavkaz. Of course add time to stop and take pictures / explore.
In spring, I take the ride in stages - it can be very warm in Tbilisi and get cooler as you approach Annanuri. Then the altitude really changes in the next stage and after a village called Pasannauri you will come to a police check-point, just before the twisty stretch leading into Gudauri. I have often turned around here due to snow at higher elevations. I would recommend an option would be to ride north as far as you can depending on weather / snow, and return to Tbilisi and take the southern route, given you are riding in April. Just a thought. |

We're currently in India and are going to ship our bike to Dubai mid feb, then on to Iran, then 'stans, russia, onwards to europe. We'd love to ride some of Iran with you guys if timing matches up. We're expecting to get the ferry from Dubai to Iran late feb and then spend a month in Iran. Give us a shout when you have your timing sorted. :) Frances |
