Ankara - bike storage for 1mth? + BMW R-series owners

Hi there,

I plan to arrive in Ankara from Syria next week and need to
find a friendly, dry and safe place to store my bike from
Mar 9th through April 9th while I visit the UK by plane. Shame
on me, I know, but my brother, the fool, has suddenly announced
he's getting married.

Does anyone have any ideas? I have spoken to Borusan Oto
the BMW place in Ankara, but they have no space.

And if anyone knows a fellow BMW R-series owner in or around
Anakara, or on the road East towards Iran, who can show a
classic amateur how to overhaul and balance the carbs on an
R80 G/S, that would be marvellous. I know the theory, but it
would be very helpful to see it done in practice to get me started.

Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob,

That friendly, dry and safe place to store your bike would be a Turkish customs point. There may be one by the airport at Ankara.

When you enter Turkey with your bike it's details will be entered into your passport. The only way that you can leave Turkey without your bike is by leaving it, for a fee, in a Turkish customs compound. The entry in your passport will be counter stamped by customs. The procedure can be a time consuming pain but there is no way around it.

Cheers,

Dicky

Attention pls.rules changed in Turkey.....

The rules about entering and leaving Turkey by a vehicle or motorcyle are changed since July-2010 according to the agreement with EU.laws.

Now, it does not matter how long your visa or stay in Turkey permission without visa is:
Your motorcycle can stay in Turkey for 6 months and this date date is stamped on your passport page.If you are retired and have a document issued by a Turkish consulate, it is 12 months.

Edirne Gümrük ve Muhafaza Başmüdürlüğü
Edirne Customs Regional Directorate
entering with vehicles /substance 4 and 5.

Thats because there are many retired people living in Turkey and all of them have houses, autos or motocycles of their own in Turkey.

You have to get it out of Turkey or leave your motorcycle to the customs area before the time exceeds.
It is not a must that you must be in turkey too while your motorcycle is in turkey. It can stay without you until the permitted date.
Important points:
1-It must be taken outside turkey or you must extend the time of stay before it exceeds.
2-You must keep it in a safe and trustable place. If someone rides it and makes an accident,
you will be also responsible of this accident.

re storage

Thank you, both, for that.

Does Istanbul Bisiklet Motosiklet have an equivalent garage in Ankara
that I could use? If so, do you know the contact details?

Thanks very much,

Bob

Hi Bob,

Just replied to your other post but now I see you are coming up from Syria. In that case go directly to Adana and find Enver's Vintage Motorcycle for both tuning advice (or you could play backgammon while he works on your bike) and storage.
