Hi All

I'm planning my first RTW trip next year in May 2009.

We are travelling from Dubai to the UK for the first part and will spend around 3 months doing this. I realise that this is the most expensive leg of our trip!

Can anyone give me an estimate of how much spending money would be needed per day - $100 per day or cheaper?

We will be camping and living as cheaply as possible of course.

I know that the advice on here says that you would need around $100 per day for Europe but do you guys think this is accurate? :scooter:

Depends on what you're riding - fuel economy factors into things quite a bit. Also appetite and the roads you want to travel on. If you're talking about USD I'd say $100 is about right a day (to be comfortable and cover for unexpected mishaps with your gear, and hidden expenses).... although I am confident you can do it for much less.

Not sure about the middle east with border crossings and such so hopefully someone else can answer monetary stuff about that.

I am currently working in Kuwait and have bought a BMW R1200 adv for my RTW trip next summer, heading east towards China etc, across to US and Europe etc.

I travelled from Riyadh to London during the summer of 2001. It only tokk me 7 days but i was doing about 6oo-700 km per day. I stayed in the youth hostel in Hafer Al Baqten, Saudi and that cost 8Sr ( less than $3.00) but is only available for men. The next evening i arrived in Amman, Jordan and stayed in one of the cheap DOWNTOWN hotels which cost approx $10.00, and it also had a secure car park. The following day i rode through damascus and arrived at the Turkish border and got a hotel room for approx $5.00. The following night ai camped on the road side somewhere near konya, central Turkey. I then caught an overnight ferry from Izmir (slept on the deck) and arrived in southern Italy (Bari) the next morning. I then set off and reached Torino by night fall ( stayed at Hotel Formule 1 approx 36euro per night see Formule1: online hotel reservation service at cheap rates ). The next morning I left Italy and arrived in London at approx 11pm, via boring motorways, toll roads.

I blasted through the middle east and europe as I've done these cities many times before and just wanted an idea of how quickly i could comfortably ride from Saudi To London.

Thanks for the advice. I guess it all depends on how long it will take. I've worked out about 2 months in Europe and around May/June time, so camping is always a good cheap option.
I don't want to rush it but at the same time, I don't want to spend all my money in Europe!

Hiya BC,

I am also in Dubai and my wife and I are planning on returning to Europe y bike early next year. I have just started planning a route and have today found this HU website.

Having knocked around the Gulf for a good few years I am petty familiar with the countries up to Jordan but I dunno which way to go from there. Did you decide to turn left through Egypt, Lybia and Tunisia or right through Syria or Lebanon and Turkey,when you reach Jordan?

Maybe we could swap info on this?

As regards whether to go North or West from Jordan, I think the reported hassle and cost of transiting Egypt would put me in favour of going North.

I noticed Roadking, you are planning to travel to UK next summer. Me too. I am just starting to look into now. How far have you got with your research. In order to make it enjoyable I would like to cover Jordan and Syria. I live in Dubai too.

Wow, its great to see so many of you folks living in Dubai! I'm planning on being in Jordan from feb 2009, staying there for 4-6 weeks, and then using the next 4-6 weeks on a motorcycle trip. I'm pretty flexible on where I go, I think it mostly depends on where I can find a moto to buy and where I can sell it when I'm done. How easy is it to buy something in Dubai? I'm pretty flexible with equipment types, and dont care too much about size (250cc would be less than ideal, but I'd still do it). any of you planning on starting a trip around march 09?

Just been working out my daily expense around Southern Europe this last summer (14 weeks). Camping on sites 95% of the time and eating out 60-65% ran to about £60, averaging 100 - 120 miles/day.

i made it few years ago from Egypt to Jordan - Syria - Turkey - Greece- Italy - France .
i think in Jordan, Syria , Tureky .your money will go on fuel and crossing borders ,about hotels its cheap there ,rooms in hotels /motels around 10 us .food is pretty cheap .
in Europe camping ,just to pitch your tent will be from 5 to 20 Euros (specially in Italy ) and try to avoid high way as it is expensive toll roads .
you must think about the fuel as i think you will may need around 50 us per day (depend on how many miles you will do every day and your how thirsty you bike is !!

Many thanks for all the replies! I have just been made redundant which has sort of changed my RTW plans but s%it happens I suppose!

I am still planning on leaving the UAE in May or if not sooner now but not sure what to do. If I left for Oz and NZ for a 4month trip, do you think it would be cheaper to buy a bike in Oz (if you can do that as a tourist) or fly my bike over. I guess I would need a carnet etc, is that right?

Possibly cheaper to buy here ... then sell. Depends on how much time you spend 'selling' - quick sale = less money.

My wife and I, two up on a 1150GS spend the following money traveling from Dubai to UK in June 2008.
Iran = $40/day
Turkey = $100/day (Turkey was more expensive than what we thought it be)
Greece, Italy, France, Switserland, Belgium = $110/day
UK (Including Scotland) = $120/day

Fuel in Turkey was very expensive, so fill up in Iran before you cross the border, also, some fuel stations in Eastern Turkey only had Diesel, so just check on that etc. The people also do not speak any english in eastern turkey, more German and some Dutch, so try and take a translation book if you cant speak German or Dutch.
We camped most of the way and tried to come by as cheaply as possible. In Italy we camped a few times next to the road (Free) at truck stops, as camp sites were about Euro20-30 in Italy.
Enjoy, it is a lovely trip and worth the expense.
