Timbuktu Trip

At the beginning of January I will be setting out with Nick Sanders and friends to head for Timbuktu. I thought it was time that my burning of natural resources benefited someone besides me. To this end I am raising money for the Casa Reom Trust. This group provides a safe refuge for street kids outside of Beira in Mozambique. Besides a safe environment they feed and educate the children. A friend of mine is on the board of the trust and I know all the money goes directly to this good cause. If you were thinking of a donation at Christmas time have a look at my site. There is also a link to the Casa Reom site.

I'll try and keep the site updated as the adventure unfolds.

I tried to get on this trip - sent the form, various emails, phoned several times - but never even got a reply :( What's up with that? I even got the 1200GS Adv specially for it too but now it's too late to go. Arse biscuits.

Nick

A combination of constant travelling and minimal organizational skills make getting hold of Nick very difficult at times. If you want to get in touch with him, you have to just keep trying. It's unusual for him not to reply to e-mail.

This is my second trip with Nick. Part of the adventure of travelling with him is not knowing what might happen next. If your the sort that like to have plans laid out well in advance this isn't the guy to go with. On the other hand if you have unexpected problems along the way there is no better guy on the planet to be with than Nick. If a mechanical problem on the road, or an admin issue arises at a border, he can talk his way out of almost anything.

Hm, I tried every form of communication bar going round his house and bashing the door in :) I'm looking forward to going on a trip with him - just looks like it'll be in 2008 instead!

route

Timbuktu route

Lisbon to Algeceris, ferry to Cueta. First Morocco night in Chefchoen, then somewhere near Merzouga, down the east side of the Atlas, back across to Tan Tan. Down the coast highway to the Senegal border. Follow the river inland, cross into Mali near Keynes then Bamako and then roughly following the Niger River to Timbuktu.

Sorry about the spellings, I did this without looking at the Map. Leaving Friday afternoon. Should be an interesting month.

Is there a web diary or blog or anything like that we can follow the trip on? I think you're right when you say it should be an interesting month! Good luck and safe riding,

Alex
