The Mongolian Charity Rally

Yes, the more observant of you will have already noticed that I have already started a very similar thread. But we are now signed up to ride to Mongolia for charity with a much more ethical event .
The organisers are a not for profit charitable trust.
Unlike the guys we originally planned to sign up with .

On the 19th of July this year myself and a friend are traveling to Mongolia on 2 totally unsuitable motorbikes so that we can donate them, and all the kit we have used to get there, to a very worthy children's charity based and operated in Ulaan Bataar. We are also trying to raise a substantial amount of money for 2 UK charities. This event is totally not for profit, even the event organisers are a registered charitable trust. We are not the only team doing this trip for charity, but as yet, we are the only 2 mad bikers going.

We are very aware that there are a huge number of extremely worthy charities both here in the UK and also abroad and are unable to give you any good reason as to why the charities we have chosen are more deserving than any other.

The aims of this mad event are 3 fold.

1:- To raise money for CAMDA. A UK charity that works solely with Mongolian nomadic families by helping them to retain their very fragile way of life through education are veterinary programs. This is important as if they are unable to continue with their nomadic lifestyle the families end up living in the towns and cities in accommodation that can only just be described as slums.

2:- To raise money for When You Wish Upon A Star. Another UK charity that helps families of children with life threatening illness's by either providing parents and siblings with rest bite care or by try to make a 'wish' come true for the very ill child.

3:- This is probably the most important part of what we are doing. When we finally get to Ulaan Bataar we will donate both of the bikes, all spares, riding and camping equipment and any spare cash directly to the CDPF (Children's Development and Protection Fund). This charity is a Mongolian charity that works to help the street children by giving them safe shelter and an education and removes them from the horrors of prostitution and having to live under the streets in the steam pipe ducts in winter temperatures of -20 and lower.#

But we have now run into a little snag, we put all our eggs into one proverbial basket as far as the supply of the bikes are concerned. Unfortunately we have not been able to secure the deal we had hoped so Team REMIT currently finds itself bike-less.

We are in need of two Bullets but they need to be cheap, really cheap. Jim Allen Motorcycles of Holton le Clay, Lincolnshire has promised all labour to help prepare the bikes FOC and Watsonian have offered any parts we require at cost. So the bikes we are after do not have to be showroom condition. Lets be honest, they won't be sparkling be the time we get to UB.

So if anyone has got anything that is taking up garage space then please drop me a line. Jim Allen does not even see it being a problem if we have to build the bikes from boxes of bits.

Partial success

A range of adverts on forums and the like has resulted in the very kind donation of a taxed and tested 500 Bullet for next to nothing from a very generous private individual. So we are now only on the hunt for 1 very cheap Bullet.

Keeping fingers crossed that we find it in time otherwise we may have to completely rethink our transport and after this length of time in the planning it would be a real shame not be go on Enfields.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
