Central Asia/Mongolia trip. Looking for a cause..

This summer we (five Americans and four Russians) are doing a three month trip, Istanbul to Ulan-Bator, Mongolia. We'll be driving a big Russian 6x6 truck (a ZIL-131). Most of us have useful skills, professional and business. We've got a web-site too: soviettruck.com

It would be great to make a the trip more meaningful, something to focus our attention on, and something concrete that would come of the project.

One idea I thought of is to bring along filming and editing equipment, with the aim of producing a documentary of some description. Not a travelogue as such, but rather taking the time to research, investigate, arrange interviews etc., focusing on a particular issue. I'm not sure what that would be, though.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Regards, David.

How about this?
Each of you raises (or takes from savings) £10,000 making a total of £90,000 (or more if you have the ability)
enough to build a small orphanage in Mongolia and pay wages for a year, film the build and hand over to keep it going?

make a film

The Adventure Travel Film Festival needs cool films. Can you make one? there's a challenge.

Personally, I think it's ok to go on holiday with mates. Fear not - you can spend the rest of your life giving to charity.

Yes - how about helping the kids mental hospital in UB directly with stuff that they need? Its one of those places that few see on their way through but is most definitely there. They get nothing from anybody, have nothing of their own and really struggle to keep going - which is why people from this site and the wider m/c community have already donated money, and why a few of us will ride there this summer to make sure stuff gets done and every penny collected goes towards making things a bit better for them. And before anybody asks, no we haven't used any of it to sub the trip!

same thing really

Hi

I was looking for something worthwhile too. Maybe I should do as Austin says. I'm sure there will be plenty of causes found on my route.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
