Alaska to Ushuaia 2007, benefit for UNICEF

I'm organizing a trip from Prudhoe bay, Alaska to Ushuaia, Argentina late 2007. The trip will be a major benefit for UNICEF, the United Nations Childrens Fund. We'll be filming a documentary of the trip involving four riders, riding unsupported.

We'll be filming some UNICEF locations along the way, camping under the stars as much as possible, flyfishing, surfing, and playing guitar very poorly.
We'll also be stopping at a medical clinic I helped to build in Nicaragua, a school in Guatemala, and a hospital in Guadalajara, MEX to see my friend who is a doctor there.

Our website should be up soon, so stay tuned!

Sounds Awesome

That sounds like a wonderful trip. With a great cause. I am looking forward to watching your documentary. We are doing the opposite of that trip right now. We are in Ushuaia waiting for our bikes to arrive. We will have to get together if and when you ride down through Alberta.

Buenos suerte!

Sounds like you guys have quite the charitable cause as well. Good luck! Drop me a line when you get a chance- I doubt 1000 mile days leave much time for emails!

How will your trip be a major benefit to UNICEF?

I am a volunteer for UNICEF here in Oregon, looking for new approaches to fundraising. I will be gathering a lot of information, video, pictures, contacts, etc. I plan on putting together a slideshow and short video presentation to be used in one our main fundraisers each year.

Also, I am filming video to be produced for tv miniseries, (we'll see if anyone actually broadcasts it!) which I will use to plug UNICEF volunteering, causes and such. I'm attempting to bring awareness and activism to a whole new group of people. The goal is to also have any major networks that get involved match our contribution (provided we actually get paid for our work)

I'm very excited about the project, can you tell?

UNICEF is a great way to contribute to something bigger than yourself. To get involved, check out www.unicefusa.org

Looks like you've done your homework! Great trip, and such a good mission. I'll be doing some traveling around Flores in the north, checking up on a medical clinic I helped build there. Do you know where you'll be or is it still up in the air?
I would really like to talk with you more about your travels and things you encountered along the way. Maybe we could hook up somewhere on the road and bs. Sent you a pm.

Good luck!

my website is JOURNEY to the End of the EARTH It's still a little rough around the edges.

Unicef involvment...

I hope to do a trip siimilar to this in the next year and am wondering how I could make it count. I live in NYC and the Unicef headquarters is actually just a block away. Anyhow, if you're involved witht hem, maybe you'd have some idea as to how someone planning a trip could get involved.

Thanks, Bruce

It's certainly bigger than myself. I am always impressed by the high number of posh landcruisers (biggest, newest model) they own, in dirtpoor countries. Mostly seen cruising in the best neighbourhoods, national parks, ...

Seeing their lifestiles, I don't see why they need my contribution. They're much richer than I am.

Hi Lost,
Worthy ideals no doubt, but you are competing with that great big film star McGregor who is doing much the same thing in Africa, should anyone be interested (!?) - much more likely that his production is going to be aired, worldwide as required, in preference to whatever else.

Right enough Uganduro - I've seen lots of NGOs as well running their affairs in the same manner; it has been enough for me to be very selective in the choice of charities to be supported by me.
Thanks for your reality check "on the ground".

You've got a very good point, there will be a great trip being made through Africa by McGregor and Boorman and crew, but I don't feel it's competition. Just because someone else is doing something similar halfway around the world doesn't make my trip any less valid or genuine, does it? People - hundreds of them- make this same journey or parts of it every year. I'm not the first or the last, famous or not to do it.
