Defender snorkel and air filters?

I'm replacing my two front wings soon, so probably time to replace the old military snorkel as well (rusty inside the metal pipes etc).

What are the best options - they all seem to be cheap plastic things that would break when whacked by a small tree branch ;-p

Also wondering if one of those fancy glass bowl type air filters is worth it on the end of snorkel?

Buy a genuine Safari snorkel from paddocks not a cheap copy. I saw a report that showed the cheap ones do not use the correct grade plastic and fail due to uv etc. they where also structurally weak.

The genuine safari will not brake before your Landy does!

It is one piece so that is useful I terms of easy fitting and reliability, etc.

Thanks - I'm thinking I might use a Mantec one similar to that above and replicate the position of the military snorkel on top of the front wing. This seems much less likely to be smashed than on the side.

I was side swiped by a truck in Botswana - he then reversed into me when leaving causing even more damage ;-p

Snorkel

I Have a Southdown Snorkel on my TD5, its a good piece of kit and not the price of a Safari (which have gone up in price AGAIN!)

The cyclone type either as in pic of green 109 , or the glass bowl type have a precleaning action , so that less gets thru to the airfilter. This is better than the plain scoop type so often seen , as your filters last longer in dusty conditions . You can make your own cheaper than pre made systems , use either stainless steel tube or ali tube, and silicone hoses. I mounted a donaldson exterior filter with a plain piped system to the intake. this is more foolproof , as it moves the air cleaner housing way above water level, as most filter housings have water dump valves which can be problematical . The cyclone filters (like that on the green 110) do reduce performance somewhat, where the "scoop" types don't. Depends how important this is to you...

If they are matched to size of engine then should not make any difference , and definately not with a turbocharged engine HTSH

Agreed, but I don't think the cyclone in the pic is matched for a turbo engine's air requirements - more for a naturally asphixiated 2.5 diesel. I experimented with my 200tdi with cyclone on and off and the difference was noticeable, particularly on the motorway. A well loaded LR, maybe with a roofrack, needs all the oomph it can get!

donaldson pre cleaners

I have a safari air intake I picked up on ebay, very durable and has been hit by a few trees & branches over the years with only minor scratches.

As for the cyclone pre filter, I bought one from here: Cyclonic Pre Filter Head - Welcome to Alien Snorkels again via ebay and was amazed at the crap it collected just from my commute allong the M4, I used to get distracted frequently by the stuff wizzing around in the bowl.

however the one pictured on the website is in my opinion too small for the TDI engine, I used the airflow calculator on the donaldson web site and found I needed the size up from the one I have - its now removed.

try googling donaldson pre cleaner. get the right size and they are amazing. btw donaldson also provide the air cleaners for many of the military defenders used in the sandbox

Another thumbs up for Southdown. It drops through the top of the wing, is stainless and has a regular scoop on top. Fully sealed, no problems in 4.5ft of water.

Hi I have the safari snorkel with the cyclone top fitted and works well I bought it in 2002 from oz .

Donaldson prefilter, works grear in dust, rain, snow storms...catches everything....now for some 3 1/2 years here in arctic.

here is how one is made (tube from mild exhaust pipe 2,5") and how its installed:

I have similar self made setup, pipe cost me some 20e and pre filter 25e...time to fabricate were some 4-5 hours.

These pre filters are used in commercial machines, but seem to work fine also in cars, so far I`m were happy with it

ps. for land rover engines take similar size, this thing need air flow rushing though it so it can create the filtering effect. Donaldson filters can be found in most agricultural (tractor) shops

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
