Discovery 200tdi Auto advice needed

Just purchased a Discovery 200tdi auto (L Reg) to enter Budapest to Bamako Rally in Jan 2012. Just in the process of giving her a good service with a change of oils and replacement alternator bracket as the current one has a hairline crack.

The rear floor has also been replaced, has new water pump, and recent new head gasket and head skim.

Question, is there any other bits I need to look out for or service prior to going on the trip.

I also plan to take a spare starter motor, alternator, hoses, and fluids are there any other essentials that i should pack? Shall I throw in a wheel bearing?

Cheers, Josh

check the front shock turrets - where they bolt to the chassis. I've snapped them off driving in Kenya (not rallying, but it felt like it <grin> ).
check the propshaft UJ's, make sure there is no slop, once they start to go, they go quickly.

CV joints are another potential spare. You can opt for the unbreakable ones from Ashcroft Transmissions, or the cheap and chearful ones from britpart. You pays your money and takes your chance. At the very least bring the tools to remove one and the front 1/2 shaft, that way you can lock the centre diff and continue in rear wheel drive.

Drivebelts, a pair of wheelbearings and a hub seal. Maybe get the gearbox filter changed - rarely, if ever, gets done, and could improve the box's chances under "arduous conditions"! Otherwise just a damn good checkover like a strict MOTer. Make sure the rad header tank is in good condition, not splitting round the seams and that the rad itself actually has some fins left in it!
Have fun,
Simon.

fit all new hoses and take old ones as spares. Fit new brake pads. change all fluids. Fit new belts, and take old/new ones. retension belts after 100 miles.
check eng and g/box mountings, and same for exh system. headlamp deflectors. dont forget drain sedimentor, and a couple of spare fuel filters. spare fuel pump. If you dont know mileage of s/absorbers if affordable fit new. inspect/replace susp bushes.
