Tyre Pressures

I’ve run my BFG AT’s at around 1 bar for many hundreds of miles with no issues.

There is a school of thought that lower pressures on gravel / small jagged rocks helps to reduce tyre damage/ punctures. I have used 1.2 bar on such tracks. Difficult to prove a negative but never had a puncture in Morocco apart from a piece of metal when on tarmac. Tyres maybe 60% worn after 35k miles.

BFG AT & Pressures

Hi folks

Here is our experience after 48,000km overland trip in Europe & Africa in a Land Rover 300tdi 1997 plate.

BFG ATs are very good but lack traction in sticky mud. I would say that's the only down side apart from costs which are variable Vs other brands on the market. Having said that we have clocked up 67,000 km in total on the same set, most of which was done on some pretty rough roads in Africa.

We managed the tyre pressures pretty carefully (see our previous post on this). You will struggle to find a universal "chart" on tyre pressure needs as it depends on several factors. However, it really helps prolong the life of the tyre and suspensions parts! We never got a puncture although we did get a small cut in the tyre wall on sharp rocks in Namibia and some inner front wear due to wheel bearings wearing down.... Nigerian and Angolan roads batter your tyres and suspension!!

If we do another trip I might consider the mud terrains but only if the trip goes that route, I see no reason not to stick with BFG ATs.... they did us proud on our trip and we averaged circa 28mpg.
