Starting problems

My starter is dying a horrible death.
The starter on my 2001 adventure doesn't turn the engine over. It's not a dead battery, its not the decompression (took spark plug out), its not the starter switch or loose cables.

I took the starter unit off and it seems to turn fine. but when installed on the bike there are some horrible grinding sounds. KTM uses a starter clutch or something like this, of which I have no familiarity. I suspect this could be the problem.
Anyone have experience with this. Is it a big job to fix?
What parts would I need to order.
