I would consider taking some engine oil if you really want to continue using fully synthetic - in Morocco only car oil was available which I had to resort too.
I would also pack a supply of the Magura oil for the hydraulic clutch. When mine leaked in London getting the stuff was impossible so who knows what the situation would be in Africa? I would also check some of the wiring before you go to check there are no bare wires - my speedo, indicators & brake light blew and no amount of messing with the fuses would fix it. Apart from that enjoy! |

Hi,
Ah, getting it serviced just before you is generally not a good idea. If whoever serviced it cocked anything up you may be far from help when it goes wrong. Check everything has been done properly : oil level, air filter replaced ok etc. I suggest you put loads of miles on it quickly to make sure all is ok. Who will service it when you´re on the road? I have a list of what I have with me on www.fowb.co.uk under: Bike -> Tools & Spares -> Spares I´d suggest the most important are: - spark plug - split link for the chain. - brake and clutch levers - front and rear brake pads check everything fits before you go. - i had the wrong clutch lever and spark plug given to me by my dealer. Have fun ------------------ Jerome http://www.fowb.co.uk [This message has been edited by Jerome (edited 27 August 2004).] |

Apologies if this is too obvious a tip: I fit all my spares before I leave, using the tools I carry with me, and carry the replaced parts as my spares (assuming they're in good condition). That way, I know all my spares fit and what tools I need to fit them.
I also carry out my own servicing, so I know how to do it, and then I've only one person to blame if I've messed something up. [This message has been edited by Ian (edited 28 August 2004).] |
