Life after the 640?
This is Caron, girlfriend of Giles and the same one who crashed her 640 in Sudan and broke her hand. (Bike was fine but has been shipped.) I'm now in kenya, cast is off and very tempted by a BMW R80GS. It has Kenyan plates so I'm told I can ride to SA without a carnet as it is classed as a local bike. It's in such good nick I'd like to ship it home from SA. Can anyone help please? Info required. Many thanks.

Sorry, can't help with shipping bike but if you find yourselves around Hazyview, Mpumalanga pop in for a and swop tales. got space if you need a bed with a roof for a night or two.

You probably need to write-off/export the bike from the Kenya then. But ask from Kenyan autoclub (if they have one) or from South African autoclub that is it possible to export the Kenyan plated bike out from SA. So you can ride it to SA without carnet and do the export procedure there (well, IF it's possible).

The problem is, if you try to import the bike into your destination (home) country, it has to be written off from the origin country's register the bike was from, it can't be registered in two countries, then it's registered into your country and plated.

Also very probably you need to pay your countrie's tax on importing from non-EU country. Check it how much it is. But there are also few tricks how to make the "market worth" price lower (i.e. take few critical bits off in the SA and say it's a broken bike back in the UK etc), so the tax you have to pay will be lower.

I ve shipped with my firiend 2 TTR in december 2005 from SA to Warsaw(Poland) through Frankfurt; It was ~1000US$ each (155kg) for Lufthansa; But after all we were told that it should be chipper at KLM Cargo; At Lufthansa they first send me to an agent but if you have a Carnet De Passage (We did) you direclty go to the chief of the customs to get some stamps; We were lucky - we got the stamps at 1605 (closing at 1600) and it was christmas the next day; I think that without a carnet you will have to use an agent at SA and there will be more paper work at home;
