KTm Problems

ive just been out on my KTM 640 ,LC4 Supermoto, for ride, and on the way back now, water started coming out of the over flow pipe, thats on the top of the radiator, and when i was clossing the throttle, and opening it back out, there was huge smoke coming from the exhaust,i stopped at a garage to top it up,and i got hel of a job to restart it,she was just smoking her head off, when the starter was turning, can someone tell me what, they reckon has gone on it,thank you, peter

I'll hazard a guess and say your headgasket is buggered .

sounds like you got an airlock in your cooling system somehow which has caused the engine to overheat, boil over and pop the head gasket.

DONT ride your bike but DO get it to a garage to be fixed.

thanks you,for the addvice you gave me,ive had the engine in bitts, and it does look like the head gasket has blown,do you recomend me to put new Head bolts on,when replacing the head, and can you tell me are the ktm a reliable Bike, cos a Guy told me,that at arond 9,000 miles, these 640 suprmotos engine need a rebuilt, cos thats put me off it a bit,ive never heard this B4,Thank you, pete

I've heard of a lot of head gaskets blowing on those engines but a rebuild at 9K sounds like bollocks to me, that's approaching Group B rally engine reliability!! Still swings and roundabouts, very high compression engines do get knackered quick, but they're more pokey, so they get ragged hard, so they break...

The 'adventure' range engines have been detuned a little I think, which should help. I wouldn't take a KTM on a big trip, and I ride Ducati-powered bikes (air-cooled, and once you have got your head around the valves and rebuilt the electrics the rest of the Ducati engines are pretty bullet-proof, I know someone who put 150,000 kms on a 750, rebuilt it with new rings seals and gaskets and compression was back to the factory setting!!). I wouldn't fancy trying to replace a head gasket in the middle of nowhere....

I have a mate with an LC4.He has had the waterpump seal go a couple of times, taking the head gasket with it shortly afterwards. You might want to check it out.

just a new gasket will be fine. the engines on the 640's are reliable as. You need a major service every 9k, not new engine rebuild!!
