Ooooooooh it is so tempting to say: "sell it and buy a Yamaha..." ahem.
There is probably some good information in the KTM section on Thumpertalk too: ThumperTalk xxx

Gio,
Rode my '02 Adventure around the world on the 45th parallel north. The machine currently has around 35K miles, 50k Km. Very few parts wear out on the LC4 the problem is the ones that do can cause serious problems. You need to rebuild your water pump and relace the cam follower rollers, rebuild the carb, grease the wheel bearings, steering linkage, swing arm and steering head bearings. Bleed the brakes and check the pads, tighten the spokes, tighten the front and rear head-bolts and replace the seal on the end of the crank in the clutch case, clean and rebuild the front forks, new seals and have an oil change done on the rear shock. For all the parts you replace, buy another set, these are your spares to travel with, plus cables, a head gasket, I'd consider a chain oiler, I used one, anyway make sure you chain and sprockets are new, buy a new battery. Hope ou have a center stand and boxes, GPS on the bars, I'd consider a Renazco seat, leather top, accept nothing else. Change the oil, new tires and tubes, upgrade your tools, set the valves...and so on Now you are a world traveler. And on an elite machine. Strongest, best handling travel bike in the world. My email is bmwstbll@yahoo.com bill |

few things
Bearings (30k km)
Be careful with rocker arm and camshaft (30k km) Note that oil change has to be done following the tech manual, step by step, (prevent air get to the upper chamber) Check front and rear shocks I'd also suggest to buy a replacement set for the clutch and check the electric circuits. Brake pads and sparkplug as normal maintanance, following the owner manual specs and schedule. Regards RG (Quito, Ecuador) |

02 & before sometimes had problems with the gearbox mainshaft bearing (behind the clutch) an upgraded roller bearing is available & with the right puller it can be swapped without splitting the cases. You should reinforce your subframe too, check out advrider for details- mine took a lot of abuse before cracking at 80 000 km though. Cheers Clint |
