how far will i get on a 640adv ??

as you probably noticed from my username i have got a zx6r which i wish to trade in for a new 640 adv, as i wish to do some serious travel this year and the zx aint to good for more than a day

it's between the dakar 650 and the adv640 im kinda set on the idea of the ktm but how far will it get me, i don't have much mechanical knowledge but could service change chains things like that.

a couple of links concerned me where bikes have big internal faults most often they are with inlet manifolds and bearings are these common or are they rare maybe condensed by there being few places to discuss the ktm, any advice would be great

The question is how far do you want to go? I've had a 640 adventure for the past 3 years and It's not given me any problems, If you replace the oil frquently and keep the valves properly adjusted the you won't have many problems.

Hi

I would say it depends what type of travelling you want to do. The KTMs like their clean semi synth oil and regular servicing. They are very reliable if maintained.

How ever for plodding through the African jungle with over loaded panniers and no nice expensive oil and repair facilities for 3000miles , I would favour something simple and robust, like an XT600 or an XL600, or BMW.

After numerous bike tests, I have just upgraded from a Tenere to a 640, which I am very pleased with.
The Tenere has been through Africa with me and no doubt the KTM will too.

Hi, Iv got a 2002 Adv640. It has been running smooth with no problems for 28300km. Compared to my previous AfricaTwin 96mod and Xt600 91mod its the most comfortable bike. Change oil and adjust valves and it will take you whereewer you wanth. But the Bmw is bether if you planning 2up on longer tripps..

Good luck
Yngve
