Good Service from Marsh Performance

During a long distance trial I was recently in, a rather nasty clattering sound developed in the top end of my LC4.

After the event, I called in at Marsh Performance in Saltash (01752 844456) for a diagnosis. This was mid afternoon on a holiday weekend Saturday. To cut a long story short the repair involved a strip down of the primary transmission and a partial strip down of the cylinder head to replace the worn part that was allowing the cam chain to jump about. All accomplished on the spot in around two hours to allow me to ride home. Over 200 miles later the bike's still running fine.

I quite agree...

Yep Swampy is a real Diamond !
- what he doesnt know about bikes aint worth knowing - its nice to talk to someone who isnt just trying to fleece you - and he also mails parts out at good prices. Even though Sideways KTM is just down the road I always give the work and business to him - (apart from getting my shiny nice new FREE Excel front rim from Sideways KTM !!!)

He uprated my 02 LH counterbalance shaft bearing to a 03 spec (preventative change - the one that came out was actually fine) for a very good price and did a good deal on a new front disc n pads last year.
Top Bloke and great service.

Ian out of interest what model year and mileage have you got ? (my 02 is on 18500 miles)

My LC4 is also an 02, also with around 18000 miles.

It's not had the easiest of lives but then I've maintained it fastidiously.

I like the machine but I have to say the vibes have started getting to me, especially having ridden a Suzuki engined Beta recently (much smaller capacity than the LC4, but so smooth).

I don't think the failure my bike suffered is a common defect - Swampy said he'd only come across one or two instances.

Is the counterbalancer bearing an advisable upgrade? I had the mainshaft bearing changed but I've not heard anything about the countershaft.

How do you go about getting a free Excel rim then?

Same part...

Hi Ian - Its the same part I believe - large bearing behind clutch.

Yes the Vibes take some getting used to - I moved from a Dr650 (which got Stolen - Bas*&%ds) which was silky smooth in comparison - the first time I rode the KTM I thought there was something wrong with it !!!
But the suspension and the strength of the frame are far better than the Suzuki.

I got a letter through from KTM UK 9th September 05 stating -
'KTM Adventure R 2001 - 2003 model year safety recall notice.'

Basically the old spokes are not up to the job with the heavy bike and the 320mm disc under heavy braking - so they will swop your old wheeel for a new Excel one.

If this hasnt been done on your Adventure then call Clarice Lamont at KTM UK on 01280 709500 and let her know your vin no - sounds like it should have on as a 02 though.

There was a thread on this a while ago. here on the HUBB ..and I would have thought youd have got a letter through on it.

My LC4 wasn't recalled because it's an LC4-E, not an Adventure.

I guess the problem doesn't apply to the LC4-E as it has a smaller front disc than the Adventure. Not sure about this though, perhaps I should check with KTM.

if you dont like the vibes get swampy to balance the motor.

he did mine and its very smooth and it also makes it a bit faster

its a bit knackered now and so its going to get done again.

Whereabouts is Swampy? Down south I've no doubt...Has anyone got a phone Number?

I'd love my '03 Adventure balanced, but its a long way for the effort.

I also got a recall on my front wheel. The disc is bigger on the adventure and so the braking forces on the front wheel are larger. I guess they must have uprated the '04 for the twin disc set up sorting the problem.

Thumbs up can't agree more. Top bloke who know's his subject.

after checking out this site late last year I picked up swampy's details to get my main shaft bearing replaced. I was just about to head out on the oddysey that I'm currently still on; in deep Cameroun.

Well he had the patience to answer all my irritating questions in a very informed intelligent manner; what a pleasure!

Now Stranded in Cameroun with a dead motor I gave swampy a call when i realised I had no idea what was wrong with the bike. He was as helpful as usual even though he was departing to France for a week!

totally excellent guy
Gotto strongley recommend him.The ride down to His spot was freezing in Mid winter and took a while but I was richly rewarded in great scenery along the way and a very patient knowledgable master of his subject at the end of the road.

just before getting another akrapovic fitted at sommers i asked swampy if an fcr was a good idea and if so a 39 or 41?

'oh yes' he said 'an 41 mx ' - exactly what sommer's suggested.

I'd be interested to know exactly what fuel consumption you'd attained with the FCR. I was going to go for the 39mm as I believe this is the one fitted to the rally LC4s.
