Fuel problem!
 

Took out my 2004 950 adv yesterday for a short ride only for it to die on me after about 20mins. I have only had the bike about a month so still getting used to it. Here is what happened, just existed a 90 degree right hand corner and went to open the throttle and it hesitated so selected neutral and open the throttle and nothing and then it cut out. I had only done 50 miles since filling up both tanks so didn’t think it was low on fuel. I let the bike cool down and checked the oil and water levels and they were fine and tried to start it again and it wouldn`t fire up. 2 hours later and the RAC turned up and he put some fuel in, it took less the 5 liters to fill the bike back up and after a couple of clicks on the starter it was up and running and ran fine and got me back home.

Has anyone had any similar problems or give me any clues, could it be because I was low on fuel? Or is it the fuel pump? I haven’t spoken to the dealer yet just wanted to get a feel for what it could be.

Any advice/help would be appreciated!

Hi, Have you previous to this mishap had the tanks off and either trapped the breather hose or left one of the fuel taps closed.
How many miles has the bike done, as the fuel pump will give good service into high mileage.

No not touched the bike since I picked it up for my local KTM dealer a month ago. The bike has now covered about 36k miles, so could it be the fuel pump?

I have had the exact same problem, the problem with my 990 was the wires that went into the ignition coils were cut, try put it on its centre stand and keep the engine running and turn the bars and see if it still cuts out.

I would start with the fuel pump, it's a weak point on these bikes and easy to check. leave the bike to stand for twenty minutes and see if it runs. Gravity will supply fuel to the carbs and it will run for thirty seconds or so before stalling/hesitating etc. And/or drop the skid plate and unscrew the black plastic cover off the pump body, you can see the state of the contacts and then if you get an assistant to turn the bike over you can see if the points are connecting.

I'd advise taking a spare to anyone taking this type of bike any distance.
