ktm 950s adv screws loose in motor!

Hi all
well it had to happen as soon as i said to someone that i had a few problems on the 950 but nothing that left me stranded at the side of the road.

Off work on tuesday so out for a play thought that i would have a ride across the country to see friends near dumfries for a quick cupper.

So riding along and gps flashed up no power but i never thought anything of it as the plug has been a pain in the past.
Next rev counter stops working, so i thought or its just a fuse so carried on, but not much further and it lost its spark as i was overtaking a wagon so with a cough and a bang i stopped.

Andy came to my rescue (thanks Andy) and we got the bike back to his.

After recharging the battery the problem became unclear as we thought that it was a charging fault but after trying to restart the engine the starter motor was spining but not engaging, so we took the generator and starter gear casing off, and found six screw heads stuck to the magnet and the windings wrecked.

The screws that hold the starter gear to the rotor must have came loose and struck the windings.

Has anyone come across this before?

Iain,

I remember something about this... check out this thread Faulty starter freewheel (sprag clutch) 03/04 - ADVrider

Maybe your bike has not had the mods... maybe you could claim if the dealers are supposed to have done work as part of routine maint.

Alternator bolts

Same thing happened on my 03 950, left me stranded on the Cumbrian moors, luckily i was with a small group and we were able to get the bike back to our camp, A new battery was collected from Newcastle and i was able to ride back to Nottingham.
Upon removal of the alternator cover the problem was plain to see, All the bolts had come out or sheared off.
At this time my bike was out of warranty but had been serviced and supposidly had all the updates done, and this was a known problem,
The bolts should have been removed and re locktited as part of a sceduled service.
KTM UK replaced my alternator under warranty and Red Line did the work.

i can remember your bike breaking down at the mini meet as it were me that rode to newcastle to get your new battery. :-)

just a update on my rotor problems

From the links that were posted I managed to find a service bulletin from KTM to the dealers with regards to the screws coming loose in the rotor. Great I thought that means its a known problem and the work has not been carried out on my bike.
The dealers told me that I needed to speak to KTM direct as the bike is now out of warranty and gave me the number and a contact to talk to.
So I rang KTM England but they would not talk to me and told me to go through the dealer.

So the dealer said that they would look into it for me.

So I waited a few days and heard nowt, so called the dealer. the dealer said that they had logged a call with ktm and were still waiting for a outcome.

Waited a few more days and called the dealer again still no word.

Now today a call from the dealer,KTM say that its not down to them, but with the dealer, but the dealer are trying to get out of paying for the repairs trying to blame KTM for not making the service bulletin a recall.

So still dont know who is going to pay for the repaires or when they are going to be done.

Without teaching granny to such eggs, I'd be mentioning the Sale of Goods Act and items "not of mercantileable quality" about now. KTM are correct, your contract is with the dealer. Make a time line of events such as:

1/9/06 Purchased bike ABC 123 X from KTM-Leeds
14/10/06 Service by KTM-Leeds at 600 miles
15/10/06 Service bulletin 12345 from KTM UK
13/4/07 Service by KTM-Leeds at 6000 miles
1/4/08 Failute of alternator etc.

Get it on paper and send it recorded delivery. Point out that you are being deprived of the use of your bike due to their poor quality work and inaction and are seeking advice. You have a right to expect workd to be carried out to KTM's standards and in line with their service bulletins so long as you present it at their stated intervals. This is not common wear, you have an expectation that an alternator wil last over 5 years. The aim is to get them to think it's possible you'll be getting a lawyer (or have). It's amazing how fast they can cave in and stop playing ping pong with KTM once they know you know.

It sounds like you've been having the bike dealer serviced since you bought it?
If this is the case then the problem lies with the dealer, not KTM.
KTM have a pretty good system in place where each individual bike's history is recorded on the dealer network system. The dealer should be logging each service on the system and checking all the service bulletins which apply to the bike are upto date everytime you take the bike in.
The alternator bolt problem should have been done long ago - my 950 had the work done in June 06, so if your dealer has been servicing the bike for you it's their responsibilty to make sure it's been done.

hi all just a quick line to let you all know the outcome of my problems,
well it took a while but after going to the dealers owner and not the service manager i got the bike sorted out foc
and the owner was to say the least a bit pi--ed off to find out that his service manager did not do the right the thing and get the problem sorted out straight away. i would like to have been there when the service manager told the owner that they knew off the problem and had not carried out the work.
well its done now and all seems to e well but only time will tell

ktm issued a recall for this problem. it is well known and documented. talk ot ktm about it, and see what you can get out of it.

no recall was issued, dealers were just given a service update to carry out on the next service,
and i did get something i got my bike fixed foc out of warranty
