Adventure 990 Panniers

Intro;
I'm planning a trip back from Qatar to the UK next summer, so plenty of time! We, two of us, are looking at the KTM Adventure 990, the route we plan will be 95% plus on tarmac, through Saudi, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, the Balkans etc. We plan to 'flash pack', i.e. stay in B&Bs/hotels, so we wont need that much pannier space, enough for first aid, tools, spares, T shirts, etc.
Question:
What would be the best panniers? I'm not keen on huge aluminium boxes, and reckon that the dual skin Gobis are way too big on the outside and too small on the inside.
I have a pair of Pelicases, which to my mind would make great panniers, but I cant find anyone who sells a lockable, detachable mounting system.
Does anyone have any advice?
Many thanks, Rob

What a coincidence

Currently I'm also in Qatar and leaving at the end of April. My route will be through Saudi-Jordan-Egypt-Libya-Tunisia-Algeria-Spain, etc. I don't know the final destination yet...

I bought a pelican 1550 from city center shopping mall and now ordering a bracket from Touratech:

Topcase Bracket Universal from Touratech-USA

For side cases you can use following brackets:

Pelican Based Adventure Motorcycle Luggage - For BMW KLR-650 Suzuki V-Strom KTM Ducati Honda...

I have read both good and bad comments about caribou brackets.

Or, you can fabricate something yourself, you still have a lot of time. I can suggest some nice workshops in the industrial area.

Best regards

Oz

Hi Oz, what a coincidence! Three bikers in Qatar all planning an escape on KTMs! I would PM you, but still havent done 5 posts, so;

Thanks for the links re the panniers, amazing you bought Pelicases from the city centre too!

Have you sorted out insurance? I cant find anything on worldwide insurance for 'big' bikes, not sure if the local Qatar insurers cover other countries too?

Are you on KneeDraggers? Some of the guys on the Pearl project are, I havent brought or bought a bike out here yet, I have plenty at home, but none of them are orange!

I'll be posting a few other questions on GPS, routes etc.

Where are you based? Could meet up for a , but not for a few days, I'm off tonight for some R&R. Rob

Hi Rob,

Unfortunately I don't have a KTM, I ride 1200GS I was thinking about getting one for dune bashing but now my contract is over and I'm leaving the country. I will talk with my insurance agency this week, I heard that they have a policy that covers all GCC but I doubt - will see. We definitely can meet up for a when you come back, I live in old airport area. Enjoy your R&R!

Oz
