950 Servicing - What Special Tools?

Dealers have to spend about £700 on special tools for the 950's which includes clutch pullers etc.

Oil Changes - Every 7,500km
---------------------------
* I understand there's a special tool needed to change the oil filter.

Major Service - Every 15,000km
------------------------------
* Carb balancing special tool

Does anyone know if this is correct and what other special tools are required?

£700! WOW! ... I hate it car and bike manufacturers do that. I understand when it's one or two special tools for a specially designed components but £700 seems excessive.

To quote from the owners manual:

"NOTE: the LC8 engine system has a dry sump lubrication system. The engine oil is pumped from the oil sump in the engine case to the oil tank. The engine oil must also be drained from the oil tank during the oil change. Since many parts must be dismounted for an oil change, we recommend having the engine oil changed by an authorized KTM workshop.

During the guaranty period, the oil change must be performed by an aothorized KTM mechanic. Otherwise, the guarantee will become void."

That would seem to be normal factory instructions. The manual then goes on to detail the removal of the filter and oil from the engine and then the removal and cleaning of the screen from the oil tank. This involves removal of the left hand side fuel tank, the sump undertray, and battery cover. The removal of the filter (which appears to be identical to other KTM motors) is carried out with a normal pair of circlip pliers so no special tool needed there.

There is no mention of balancing carbs in the owners manual or the use of clutch pullers but £700 does sound excessive for only a couple of special tools, a good set of pullers can normally be had for less than £100 - carb balancers not a lot more. I understand that the diagnostic computer for BMW's is about £12,000! has anyone heard that - you would have to sell one hell of a lot of bikes to recoup that expense - that's one advantage of carbs over injection I guess!
