640 SM and Adventure

Just wondering if there is any huge difference between the 99 model bikes. just seen a nice 99 ktm supermoto for handy money and wouldnt mind looking at it and doing conversion to a sort of adventure model. are there any huge differences in these bikes apart from changing sprockets and a long range tank

lots of work to do....

regardless of the age of the model, the LC4 620 SM, has smaller wheels, shorter forks, rear suspension is different. The sprockets are the cheapest part if you go to 16/45 which is most practical and may need to be changed anyway.

well if you can find all the bits and find spare dosh...
it is possible to turn a SM in to a Adventure, or look around and get a ready made one...
If you can find a LC4 SC, SXC or Enduro as I did, you got the better base to start with, the suspension is longer already but need 4.6N/mm in the front and 70/260 at the bag, a big tank and off you go, forget the wind shield, use the SC lamp mask to safe on weight... well the seat need to match the tank remember that.

here in Germany you can get a original KTM 2000 ADV LC4 620 below 2000-Euro and up to 3000-Euro fully kitted ready to roll and get it registered in Ireland, which is easy, MOT, insurance and post office... and you are set.

I just recently changed the fuel tank from 18lt to the 28lt Adventure tank incl. the vacuum pump and a seat, on my LC4 640 Enduro but have a harder rear spring already fitted, the front springs want to be upgraded soon from STD 4.2N/mm to 4.6N/nm from the Adventure, quit a lot of work at the end to study all the parts books.

can you tell much what model it is from the bike itself?

For Sale: 99 KTM 640 LC4 SUPERMOTO. Price: €2,700 - DoneDeal.ie

ya i was thinking of a larger tank and fairings. but then again if it ends up being a costly swop over i may be best off just waiting till a nice 640 adventure popped up around. thing is they are bloody dear around hear.

I can see how you feel....
there is this wish... for a start... this "I want it here and now" better yesterday than next week... sort of thing....
I know it will not make you feel better saying this....

But to help you out some how.... here are some links where to find some LC4 620 and 640 Adventures in Europe, if you are prepared to travel a bit to fetch your bike.... I can offer some translation if that helps...

have a look at eBay under:

KTM LC4 Adventure R 640 mit Mikuni Vergaser Enduro
ebay auction no: 230241434614
located in Isenbüttel, Deutschland price
1.255-Euros ending 20.04.08 21:08:02 MESZ

KTM LC4 Adventure
ebay auction no: 140224428464
located in Gartenau-St. Leonhard, Österreich
855-Euros ending 20.04.08 22:31:08 MESZ

if you think ebay is not your game have a look
at:
2nd hand bikes at Startseite*@ KTM Beckfeld - Ihre KTM Vertretung in Münster in
Germany
or K T M - S O M M E R = KTM-Sommer
or KTM-MUSCH = KTM-Musch
I had my Engine rebuild by KTM-Musch as I was still working in the UK they did a good job on my old KTM EGS 2-stroke 350cc Enduro from 1989, and KTM-Sommer is the biggest dealer around and have a lot in stock do international mail order too... at least they know where to get 2nd hand Adventuers... they still have new LC4 640 Adv, lined up in there shop.

in the end it's always the same... if you are not looking there will be plenty bikes around, but as soon you start searching... they will be all vanished over night...

I tell you... seriously... you are better off getting the right bike right away, before you start botching about tarting up an SM even if you have to wait a bit, but it will safe you a lot of hassle and money in the end.

had look at the links, not bad but think concentrate on getting the bike sold 1st and then see what i can afford or will i just add to it and put funds towards a bike readyt o go rather than mess around trying turn something thats not and adventure bike into one and would prob cast me more in the long run

I see, yes... you are right......

well vehicles are a bit like women... look at here long and closely... before you decide to get merged to here... or you will have trouble getting here of your head....

any way meanwhile I found this link, which will give you a better over view of the model change and there weaknesses.
