retired from work, traded in my ZRX for the adventure (3000 miles)and am about to head out for (hopefully) the next year from boston ma down to s. america- been preparing for a while but didnt settle on "the" bike till recently and so have done little to prepare the bike- any suggestions would be greatly appreciated-

Re mounting sidestand and mainstand. It depends what year your Adventure is. If it's a 2000, a blue one distinguishable by its all blue seat, then you can mount both as there's a separate bracket for the sidestand, at least there is on mine.

I believe, for the 2001 and 2002 silver ones, it's either one or the other, as the sidestand uses one of the brackets used by the mainstand, though watch this space.

JNTaylor and James are one and the same!!!!

You're lucky if you have the option of both centre & sideatands on the 2000 model. Watch the sideatand as it is weak.... I've have 3 welds so far (18,000 k's to UK to Oz). I would reccommend getting a welder to strengthen the joint - dirt cheap in Eastern Europe & beyond... (15p (10ec) in India!.)

Congrats for your trip to S.A.! :-)

If your model is a 2000 (like my former KTM, now I own a 2001 model), please notice that you "can" mount both sidestands, but the kick starter will stop working proprly when sidestand is up. I'm very tall so I had no problem with main stand, but I mounted a sidestand too... when my electric starter had a failure in the middle of nowhere I had to unmount the sidestand in order to start the engine again, so be carefull and carry with you the right tools! ;-)
