1998 640 LC4 Hodge-podge
 

I'm writing for a friend who is riding a 1998 KTM 620 LC4 with me across Africa (I'm on a BMW Dakar). He bought the bike used in SA (and it didn't come with a basic user's manual), and we've been tinkering with it on weekends to make it ready for the bush.

So far, it's needed: better lights, larger tank, louder horn, new kickstand (his was homemade), some sort of pannier system (the soft v. hard box debate rages on) knobby tires, tool kit, new starter, replacement fork seals and dust boots etc. But that's the easy bit, and is no more than what I've done to make my Dakar Africa-worthy (and mine's heavy as an Elephant and getting heavier).

Where can he get his hands on a LC4 repair manual? Are there KTM websites out there with info in them comparable to f650.com for the BMW?

Help me out! Between my Dakar's mysterious FI system, and my buddy's KTM rattling all over the place, we will certainly need it! We need a basic FAQ-type website to answer dumb questions like: do you check the oil with the dipstick screwed all the way in, or resting on the top, etc.

Folks on the HUBB have answered tons of my Dakar questions...come on KTM fans, bring in the goods!

My reply is maybe not what you are looking for but why do you want to have better lights?
Driving in after dark in Africa is not a good option anyway, or...?

You're right about riding in Africa at night being a dangerous game, but realistically it's going to be a necessity if only to get from campsite to food. Currently, I live in Lusaka and have only the bike to get me around on, which means night riding as well.

We decided it's better to be prepared for whatever comes. To that end, our bikes are covered in 3M reflective tape as well!
