why would a bike only run poorly after a half hour run?

my kle runs fine and ticks over, starts no problem, but after a half hour run it just keeps cutting out. it starts again and putting the choke on seemed to help it get going again, which i suppose might be a fuel starvation thing? but have tried everything i can think of, have had the tank off, the fuel tap apart, the carbs off. have wd40ed the cut out switch and ignition, checked the breather pipe, spark plugs, hd leads and plug caps . . .
has anyone any ideas please?
i got to get to work.

You had the carbs off but have you cleaned the jets out or cleaned the float valve ??

Sounds like fuel starvation to me too.

Check all your tank breathers and carb breathers for blockages or kinks.

Do you mean it cuts out after 30 mins of normal riding ???

hi, yes I did check the jets and float valve - they were immaculate, unless i missed something. I have checked the tank breathers, gonna look in the manual and see if i can locate the carb breathers so i canb have a look.
it does run normally for around thirty minutes, (yeah just normal riding up the A2) then just dies, and struggles to start even with a bit of choke on, but will start again and run normally after it cools down again. it's only an 07 plate. it has recently been pushed over and i recently changed the air filter for a dna air filter and recently replaced spark plugs - it has never run right since so i put the old air filter back in this evening. checked i had got the right spark plugs, took the carbs off etc etc.
drving me up the wall it is!
might get a push bike.
help!!

Elec-Trickery

It could be electrics, as much as I hate to throw another veriable into the mix. There are a number of componates, even down to board level, that could turn up their toes when they get hot and then start working again. The big problem with this sort of fault is the onloy way to really test is to find a complete set of known good, and start to swap out parts.:(
I would start with the obvious, like spark coils and generation coils, then the CDI unit.

Greetings Nathan

I don't know the KLE very well (instant disclaimer :-)

But something else that could be causing your problem is if the fuel tank vent is blocked this causes a semi vacuum in the tank. If that happens it will cause the bike to fuel starve after being ridden for a while. To check if that's the cause open the fuel cap when the bike starts to cut out it will equalise the air pressure in the tank.

Good Luck

Nigel could be right...

As the components heat up they can start to perform badly if they have a fault. Ignition coils are the usual culprit and the regulator/rectifier.

You say it has NEVER been right ?? Did you buy it second hand with this problem ?

It it runs perfectly for 30 mins of normal riding, I think you can pretty much rule out incorrect jetting or mixture.

FYI, choke on a hot bike will only make things worse... (or it should do).

When the float valve was cloggod on my XT600E, it would only run on the choke as it was a seperate input.

Do you have the tools and means to check your coil and regulator ???

Does the starter motor turn over strongly at ALL times ???

hi have u checked filters in the fuel tap .not clogged up or any gaskets
damaged .if they are ok try getting your rectifier checked out are your lights dim when cuts out or stalls as this has happen with a couple of my bikes and it was a rubber diafram in the tap when heated up started to stick (and the same thing stalling after 30 mins or so )on a other bike was rectifier started to play up stalling and starting after cooling down.
my mates triumph is in the garage getting sorted for the same thing and it was the rectifier had not been working and the alternator packed in and his bike is a 07 with 8000 miles on.
hope it is some help

got it

i just went to work and back without any problems at all. i was up at seven this morning messing with the bike again - it turned out that the tank was squashing the carb breather pipe and now i've re-routed it the bike seems to be running fine.
i wanted to say thank you all for your suggestions and advice, i've learned loads the last couple of days even if it did turn out to be something really simple.
i love you all.
thanks.
