stock-tires in sand?
 

hello all
I bought myself a 2000 KLR and am planning to take it to Morocco , Mauritania en hopefully to Senegal.
Does anybody have any experience with the stock Dunlop Trailmax tires in sand?

The stock tires aren't much good in sand. Fairly worthless actually. You'll need something more aggressive.

however this puts me in a difficult situation since the tires are just a few hundred kms old but thanks anyhow

The stock tires are pretty good on the street and in hard packed gravel roads. I use them for around town as they are pretty cheap and relatively long lived. You can always put them back on later.

The stock tirs are great on Dry Grass and dirt roads but thats about it. Check out the following tires

I've got trailwings on my AT... Yek! The only thing good about it is the name. They don't last very long, have poor offroad grip, have poor wet-tarmac grip. I would not take them into the desert.

I guess best you can do is get good offroad-tires (something like michelin desert) and keep the trailmax for when you get back again. A good off-road-tire make a world of diferance!

Wouldn't you agree that the Trailwings are better off-road than the stock Dunlops?

For people like me who ride their KLR back and forth to work in the city during the week we have to find some kind of balance between street and dirt without changing tires every weekend. I would be a little sketchy riding nobbies at 80 MPH down the freeway.

I use kenda dot knobbies, but i grew up on dirt bikes and cant get it out of my system. They are fine for street but not much freeway, and theyt wear out quicker and dont corner as well obviously. but when you hit that nasty hill out in the boonies in the dirt - youre glad you have em!

Perrelli MT21 worked great for me this year. Pretty aggressive knob but well behaved on the paved. I even had some fun on the paved twisties. Only thing is they're expensive and fairly hard to mount.

I'm with Ian, the Kenda is a very good when the going gets nasty. I think they are K270's, they are around $30 for the rear and in my case thats a pretty good price. The only draw back is when you are going doun the freeway it sounds like a monster truck, but they will take you any where.

I don't have experiance with the trail-max, but it looks (on a picture) not to bad.
I do have experiance with the (also stock) trail-wing and I am not impressed with it.
Ofcourse I can not say witch one would be better, but I can say that in the sahara both are not suficiant.

Ofcourse I am no expert on tire's (actually no expert at all http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/wink.gif ) and I am still trying to figure out what tires to get next....

thanks heaps everybody, I think I'm gonna set some knobblies in spain, I suppose availebility there is no problem ( e.g. kenda's or mt21's), right?
bye the way , do the kenda's wear out quick, when used both off- and on-road? I get the impression that the mt's do last a while.

UPS shuold be dropping my K207s off in about ten minutes, but a fellow rider has 9,000 miles on his 2002 KLR and about 2000 were on the stock tires and the rest were on Kendas and that is about all he could get out of them, thats riding back roads and rough pavment.

I have run many sets of mt21's and a few kendas and let me tell you, imho, the kendas last awhole while longer (the k270's). The mt21 is really a ferocious knobby that somehow cuts it on the street. And boy, the street cuts it! but they are nicer in the dirt

Hi Kurt,thinking of traveling to mexico on my sportster wonder if MT21's will be well suited.I've heard horrible stories of man eating burros' and mules is their any truth to this rumor.And what of the trail of diapers is it navigable?
