Spongy rear brake pedal - what´s the cause?
Hi Folks,
I was riding down the terribly steep roads descending to Lake Atitlan Guatemala yesterday when the rear brake pedal started pushing all the way down and not slowing the bike at all. Then it would come and go, working occasionally then not working again. The fluid level is ok. Any ideas on the problem? Cheers Zane |

sounds like you've boiled the fluid, empty, refill, bleed................disco

Spongy brake pedal is normally attributed to air in the system and can usually be resolved by bleeding the system, but I would agree with Mcgiggle that you drain the system, fill with new brake fluid, and bleed the system.
One doesn't know when last the brake fluid was replaced, and by the sounds of things, you were really testing the brake fluid to it's limits. |

If you have ABS check that the master cylinder if working OK. Mine was sticking (F650GS) and caused rear sponginess. Its supposed to be a replacement part but my mechanic diassembled and cleaned it.

Its just air in the line, probably caused by some excessive bouncing around. Air compresses but fluid doesn't, which is why you're able to press the pedal all the way without effect. Just replace the fluid and bleed the brakes, you'll be fine.
Chances are you were low before, which is why the air was able to get in. Make sure you keep an eye on the fluid level when you next change the pads, as pushing the pistons in may raise the level above the top of the reservoir and cause a spill.
