Is it possible to make my supertrapp exhaust quieter?
 

i´m in central america now, and my loud exhaust is making people´s ears bleed in these thin, colonial streets. is there anything i can do to make it less harsh? the supertrapp on my klr is the older type, i think. when i bought the bike i went from 15 plates in the back to about 6.

some sort of cone-shaped thing, that would help to mute it a bit, maybe? welding is cheap. any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, change the material (glass wool) inside for a new one and takeoff some more plates maybe. Check the carburetion late.

Loud pipes
 

Basicly you have to change sound energy to heat. The more metal or baffles you get in the stream of exhaust and sound waves coming out of your head pipe the quieter it will be. if you just keep taking out discs you will also reduce power and upset the running. Build a slip over cover for the discs and extend it a bit to the rear and make more muffler behind, then exhaust the noise down.
I have done this several times with loud pipes on street bikes and it does work.

so i should put the discs in a soup can and bolt it into the pipe, basically? what is a good length?

Quiet pipe perhaps
 

If you have a steel bodied super trapp you could weld to the body of the muffler and build up a flange larger than the discs then hose clamp a piece of metal tubing..proper size can....and extend the muffler back further beyond the discs yet still be able to dissasemble it to clean your discs.
