KLR650 '03 underseat storage?
 

Just how much room is there under the seat of the '03 KLR650? What canIrealistically squeeze under there?

I haven't got an 03 model - but do have an 00 and pretty sure it would be identical. The answer is virtually nothing as there is no proper storage under there . Having said that I have a few bits and pieces under my seat:
- some large cable ties - tied to one of the sub-frame rails
- spare key
- spare fuses and bulbs squeezed in a small packet on top of the battery.

With a bit of imagination you could store a few more similar type items there but its definately a minimalist space; theres no storing of waterproofs or similar as you can achieve on a Vstrom or similar. Also it is not quick access - you need a screwdriver to remove the the sidecovers and then two further screws to take the seat off.

I agree that there's no real storage: maybe you find places for some bits of wiring, fuses, that sort of thing.

However, you can remove the screws holding the seat on and throw them away. I've had a single bungie looped over the back of my seat for many tens of thousands of miles, and that (plus the fact that there's often a small duffel or other baggage strapped there) holds the seat in place under even the most dire circumstances. To remove, I just pop the bungie off and lift the seat. Saves a lot of frustration and time.

Others have used H.D. velcro to hold the seat in place. Same basic concept. And if you insist on leaving it bolted on, at least use a hole saw to drill out the plastic side covers so that you can access the seat bolts without removing the side covers first.

There is really no underseat storage and the way the factory installs the fuse holder is really silly- on a clip on top of the batterey cover which locks it into place between the frame rails.
Best way I found to avoid the need for removing the seat is to relocate the fuse block away from the battery cover top and rearrange the wires so that it dangles in front of the battery behind the left side cover. Then if you need to replace a fuse it is a quick job of undoing the front sidepannel retainer and popping in a new fuse. The battery also can then be taken out and put back without touching the seat and only removing the side cover.If you want you could lengthen some of the wires , but not really needed
