KLR 650 A 1991 (TENGAI) vs. 2005?
 

One of my KLR 650 A (2005 model) ended up in the back of a Bakkie in Khayelitsha last March. Frame badly damaged.
I can get hold of a KLR 650 A frame build in 1991 (KLR 650 Tengai) from Germany.
Anyone out there able to confirm if the frames of the KLR 650 Tengai and KLR 650 A 2005 model are actually the same before I ship scrap metal around the globe???

I am 99% sure they are the same. I will post on KLR650.net just to confirm. From what I've read there are some differences in the front springs and brakes and plastics of course.

I have an 89 KLR and a 90 Tengai and the frames are exactly the same. The 89 is in pieces now.

What are you going to do about the vehicle identification number? Is that a problem? Just curious.

I will use the papers and VIN of the 1991 bike and stick all the bits and pieces of the 2005 bike onto it. Get the engine number of the 2005 registered in the 1991 papers, scrap the 2005 frame - who cares?

I'm just asking cause I thought they checked the engine number and the frame number during border crossings. I'm not familiar with border crossings (yet) and was wondering if using a different frame would be a problem. I have an extra frame from an 89 KLR and was going to have it powder coated and installed on my 90 Tengai but since I don't have a title for the 89 frame I would'nt be able to insure it or inspect it 'cause they will check the frame number.

As said above about the numbers being different on the frame and engine. Certainly worth asking other travellers who have been to the places you are planning on going. Again the same problems arise here in the states as above with the inspection and registration

VIN and engine number
 

Here in S.A. you have to go for a police clearance as soon as you change the vehicle's engine. The old engine number gets deleted and the new one gets checked and entered into the title of ownership. New frame with new VIN means new vehicle.
Probably the same whereever you go.
