klr 2007 vs klr 2008
 

Sorry if I ask a Q that was already over spoken

I heard the 2008 model has few new mechanical impruvments. what are they. shoul one insist on the 2008 or the 07 is quite good? What should I look on when I purchase a used klr?
A friend is on his way to buy a klr in the US and take it AK to TDF. I try to help the guy

Go with the 08 KLR

There are quite a few changes (mechanically) between the 07 & 08. Balance chain tensioner (doohicky) as well as others. General consensus is that the 08 is better than the earlier models. This question has been asked previously here on the HUBB. Try the search engine for more detail.

As for me - I had an BMW 05 R1200GS with all the bells and whistles. I found it to be unreliable in the electrical side with an expensive diff rebuild. I bought a 2nd hand 08 KLR and am happy with it. It certainly doesn't have the street cred of the BMW and can't match it in the go & stop department, but they are reliable with any problems well documented. In the States there are large sources of aftermarket gear available. For us in Australia it is mostly cheaper to source parts from overseas than from down the road.

My KLR at Ayres Rock Northern Territory Australia.

I've owned a pre '08 KLR and ridden some well set up ones with all the good stuff done. But after riding the '08 I felt it was a MUCH nicer bike. Better brakes, smoother, better handling. Still needs some work but a very nice improvement on the original KLR.

Some early '08 KLR's had severe oil consumption problems which is attributed to parts suppliers to the Thai made KLR. Kawasaki have dealt with this problem and replaced quite a few motors. New KLR's no longer have this problem.
