Southern Argentina with a broken voltage regulator - any generic parts fit? KLR650

So we`re cheap skates and the guys here want close to $US 300.00 for an original 10 year old voltage regulator for our 2001 KLR 650 - ours is overcharging at 18 volts and draining the battery to death.
Is there another part that we could substitute that we don`t have to fork out for? We`ve just lost all of our camping stuff too so we`re not super cashed up at the moment.
Also, will a used part do just as well as a new one? I didn`t think the regulators could deteriorate but apparently our one did.. Haha

Is yours 6 pin socket type? pretty much unique to Kawaski where most other bikes use 4 pin sockets.

Any 6 pin Kawasaki reg/rec from around that era will work.

Yeah, the 6 socket model is proving difficult to find, but where there`s a will there`s a way. I`ve got a friend nearby who`s talking about using an old car regulator and chatting with an electrician about rigging it up for the moto. I`ll let you know how it goes if we go down that route.
And thankyou for the offer from Texas. I just love the community of motorcyclists. I think if everything fails here we`ll burn down to Punta Arenas in Chile with our fingers crossed. If that also fails, I might have to chat with FedEx Texas. Haha

For those looking in Argentina, there is a brand called Pietcard, they make 12V regulators. Cost around $30.00
Best to buy them direct from a dealer or manufacturer than get a mechanic to change it over for you. There are good mechanics, and then there are the other type too..
