"clacking" on starting
2006 model, 9000 miles
Am getting a loud "clacking" noise on starting, it has been happening for a while to be honest, and doesn't seem to be getting much worse. It mainly happens on cold starting, wether this is due to a lower battery voltage, or higher torque requirements, am not sure. It doesn't happen all the time. So far i haven't ended up with the starter whirring but not engaging. I will be stripping it down when i get round to it (too many jobs etc) or as soon as it becomes terminal. Is there a common fault that causes this?

What was the end result of the clacking? Anything serious?
