Backfiring KLR - any suggestions

Problem: A backfiring KLR

Things tried so far: New air and oil filter, clean fuel filter, oil change, petrol cleaner additive

Possible reasons: possible oil overfill on prior oilchange, bad petrol

Trying next: clean carb, new spark plug

ANY SUGGESTIONS WELCOME!

By backfiring, I assume you mean out the exhaust. My KLR did the same thing when I rode through Central America a few months ago, especially when going downhill using the engine to brake. My travel partner's R1100GS was not as fussy about fuel as the KLR, which surprised me. Maybe there is something to this fuel injection stuff after all. Anyway, when I got back to the USA it acted normal again. Of course I don't know how bad yours is, but if it's not too bad I would ignore it. If it is popping out the intake that is another matter entirely.

Is it backfiring all the time or just when you close the throttle? If the latter, check the pilot mixture screw & screw outwards in 1/8 increment of a turn at a time. This should richen it up a little.

Also look for leaks in the exhaust system.

check the ignition coil and spark plug. clean the carb.

it's not a lean fuel pop-pop backfire. It a full on, scaring the locals one. But it does only happen on intake (Down hills, slowing down etc) Just a LOT.

er, I never said what this actually was then? Loose header pipe nuts... well ok, one of them was completely missing.... haruummmmmm...
