Attention KLR650 owners

Hey this forum is great, I wouldn't go anywhere else for info on touring and adventure travel.

But this forum is the most active for KLR650 info BY FAR!

Grant Johnson 13 Feb 2002 00:41

yeah, but the colours!! My eyes still hurt...

Lots of posts, and some good info though.

c0_re, how about telling them about us?? http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif

Maybe we can grow this forum! It's very new, only a couple of months old.

Our primary purpose in establishing the bike forums such as this one is for riders to discuss the long distance specific aspects of the bikes, info which is lacking in the other forums we've seen.

Whatever works and wherever you can get the info needed.

Hey thanks for the reply, I dropped a post over there about this site. It gets plenty of traffic but topics hang around for awile so there sure to be a few more people showing up here and there.

c0_re 14 Feb 2002 00:27

Well I tried to post a topic over there about this site, but the administrator took it down and told me not to post links to other sites. I tried to explain to him that your guys's site is completely different but I didn't get a responce back yet so whatever, feel free to delte this topic if you like. :-(

Agreed Maniac I don't have a problem with Glen and I love the KLR forum and people over there. I think anyone who rides KLR or any other dual purpose cycle would REALLY be missing out if he or she didn't know about this place.

I will continue to use Glen site and BBS for KLR specific talk but this site is great for everything else.

It would be nice if when I clicked on the KLR link here it would bring me to Glens board, it's too bad somthing couldn't get worked out.

I do prefer the colors over here though not quite as offensive to the eye's.

co re
I have watched that board for almost 9 to 10 months now, and I think that Glenn just doesnt want anyone to knock him of his soap box, that is his board but it is for us to use as a group, I am glad to see people post other sites and boards, I like to see and read other peoples boards. I visit alot of diffrent sites every day, one reason is I dont want to read about one OIL THREAD for weeks and some just have more well they just have more. one of my favorites is DSN_KLR they have damn near 2000 members and there is a new post almost every 5 min 24 hours a day. well to sum it up I dont think Glenn likes it when someone talks about a board or site that is not his. I think we should go on strike I am sure Uninon Jack would go with us that basterd. I will now climb out of my soapbox.

Thank you

I couldn't resist seeing this when I looked at their web site. Being a programmer, I often look at the source code on websites to get an idea of how people are doing things.

Anyway, if you go to: http://boards.gamers.com/messages/me...LR650&id=zzxlp

And 'View Source', you will see:

Ian, what's wrong with my admin principles? http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/confused.gif
Read below and maybe you'll understand, brother.

Grant, you obviously have the resources ($$$) to have the amount of bulletin boards that you do. The fact is, I do-not. Even though you use the infopop system which is affordable, I can't afford the $50+ a month necessary to host even a single board such as this. The reason why I don't want it spammed on mine is because I have put a lot of effort into getting it known and a lot of nice people put links on their personal pages because they liked it. I'm afraid that since you can afford to run such a site, I will get shut out. That's what happens in situations such as this.

I run ONE board, KLR specific. You have well over 15 boards... and I know for a fact that your KLR board does not mean as much as mine does to me. I have the uneasy feeling that you wish to yank all of my readers over to your board, and that's why I reacted the way I did. You've got plenty of boards to play around with, why try to squish mine?

T0by, glad you caught that! hehe... http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/tongue.gif
I put that in there because I don't use any programs to assist me in design. Well, unless you consider notepad a design program HAHA. http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/eek.gif

Kurt 14 Feb 2002 20:29

Ok folks, lets all be friends. It's a big beautiful world and we should all 'share the dream.' That's what the internet is all about.

Kurt

Grant Johnson 15 Feb 2002 04:14

Kurt, agreed - that's the whole point here.

Glenn,

There's seems to be some confusion and a bit of paranoia here, which requires a response from us.

For those who are new to the board and the site, we're not some huge conglomerate - there's just the two of us. We started the site in 1997, and have worked very hard to grow to where we are now. This is my ONLY job, and currently Susan's at the moment. We fund it almost entirely out of our own savings, with minor income from writing articles, and a very few advertisers, which covers the cost of hosting and not a lot more. This site is more than a labour of love, it's our life, so don't be too quick to judge importance.

We currently have 38 forums (which by the way costs the same for the licence as one) all of which have been in response to requests from users. See the website feedback forum http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb...ML/000006.html for the start of the KLR forum for example.

We have a huge links page which links to hundreds of sites, all for the purpose of sharing information. The web was built on that premise of sharing, and we object to the idea implied by your admin principles and your own post on OUR site: that links can only be TO your site. It's actually insulting to characterize them as spam, especially when they were posted by your own users, people who have no connection to us.

As for the history of the current conversation, a couple of people who shall remain nameless http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/wink.gif came from your site and posted a half-dozen posts here with links recommending YOUR site.

That's fine with me. We have NEVER restricted people posting links to other sites on our board. The whole point we have built the site on is "Share the Dream" - in other words, pass on the information, help others do it too.

The following was the ONLY comment I made on this:

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica">quote:</font><HR>

... how about telling them about us??

Maybe we can grow this forum! It's very new, only a couple of months old.

<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

NOTE especially the statement:

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica">quote:</font><HR>

Our primary purpose in establishing the bike forums such as this one is for riders to discuss the long distance specific aspects of the bikes, info which is lacking in the other forums we've seen.

Whatever works and wherever you can get the info needed.

<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

We often stress the importance of the Horizons Unlimited motorcycle travellers community worldwide, and we are proud of having helped to create those links between people all over the world. But that community is also a part of the larger community of motorcyclists. You, and us, are also members of that larger community, and we both contribute to it.

What we would like is sharing (what the Web was built on, NOT walled neighborhoods). We have an expertise in long distance travel, you have an expertise on KLR's - and that's fine. We can help each other. And our readers can help each other - and that's what it's all about. In that spirit, we have put a link to your site on our links page.

Here Here!! Well said grant. I personally love the diversity between sites and i visit many bike sites more than once a day. Lets just be a community of riders, and not a community divided into factions. Ill never quit posting on either board unless i get hit by a bigrig! PEACE
