buying a second hand KLR650 (08-10) anything to look out for?

Hi all. I'm looking at buying a 2008-2010 KLR 650 with around 20,000 kilometres on the clock, having never owned one before are they any particular quirks/issues to look out for? Is it worth spending a few extra dollars to get a later model or like the DR650 are they fairly much unchanged?

Thanks.

The main complaint with new generation KLR650 is oil use. Quite a few '08 to '09 used A Lot of oil. Kawi replaced some cylinders/piston/rings on warranty ...and then by "around" 2010 the problem was ..."supposedly" fixed. Only it wasn't. Not totally.

Reading the KLR forums you can learn more about this than you'd ever want to know. FACT: Unless oil use it ridiculous ... it's really not a problem. Both my buddies riding KLR's ('09 and '10) bikes use some oil. But not much.

Like a few ounces in 1000 miles. So ... you DO have to keep an eye on your oil level ... always ... but under easy riding not a big deal. BUT ... If you're hammering it HARD, running at or near top speed ALL DAY, then oil use will go UP. As you would expect.

If buying a used KLR I would try to find one where the Doo Hickey has been fixed. (yes, even new gen ones need a fix)

Beyond that, I would just look for tell tale signs of abuse from severe off road use. (something the KLR should NOT be used for IMO!) Things like dented lower frame rails, beat up bash plate, dented wheels, beat up swing arm underside, beat up rear brake rotor. If it's been a mostly road bike, then should be fine .... as long as owner never ran her LOW on oil. Some clueless ones have done this. Not Good. doh

Hopefully you'll NOT get one with bodged up wiring where amateur owner tried to "fix" something or add something into the loom. Can be trouble if done wrong ... and hard to sort out. Stock is best if you can find one. But the bike will be VASTLY improved with suspension modification.

Have fun, good shopping! bier
