Iceland Accommodation

Hi Iceland experts. Mrs Berin and I are planning a trip to Iceland late July/early August, around 2 1/2 weeks in Iceland. We'll ship bikes from Immingham. My question is around digs - normally we book the first and last nights but not anything else, but I've heard accommodation is in short supply. So - if we turn up, or book a day or so in advance, will we get a place to stay? And are there places where there's no digs and camping is the only option?

I'm not against camping per se, but on most of our other trips it's been easier to find rooms than to camp, and it saves loading up the bikes with extra kit

Last year when my vehicle was shipped from Immingham to Reykjavik, the day before my vehicle was due to clear customs I arrived in Reykjavik and stayed in Guesthouse Helga. Looking at the map its close to the docks and I intended to walk there in the morning, but the owner of the guest house is a taxi driver and offered to take me down there instead. Once we arrived in the docks he was vey helpful, and went into the Samskip office found out I need to go to the yard and dropped me off right next to my truck....... he wouldn’t would take any payment for the taxi ride.

For my trip last year i only had the first and last nights accomodation booked. I had planned on camping for most of the trip (3 weeks). At one point after 3 cold wet days with some snow and sleet in a row i decided to get somewhere warm and dry to stay first night i was near vik on a friday with a storm coming everywhere was booked out so had to camp, next morning i headed east past the iceberg lagoon, really cold with sleet and snow and my heated grips stopped working. After a long day i made it to hofn, which apart from camping was booked solid too, after checking booking.com app i found a nice hostel over an hours drive away in Djupivogur. where i managed to dry my gear and a good night fun with a mexican fella, a local and 2 french women drinking in a cafe. After all that i should say if your not camping it might be best to have accomodation booked ahead, maybe at least book the day before or that morning. i found the app very usefull it saved me about a tenner in reykjavik i walked into a hostel found out how much it was, then booked with the app saving me () money.
Some places like hevravellir there is no choice as accomodatiion is really limited.

I too about going to Iceland end July/August for 2 weeks. Am planning to camp and sometimes stay in a hotel. I would recommend booking in advance as once outside of the capital, towns are few and far between and most towns are quite small so accomodation will fill up quickly in popular spots.

We are taking the ferry with a stop in the Faroes, what is it costing to ship the bike

Are you taking the ferry from Denmark? Looks nice, but adds a long ride on roads to the trip.
Shipping costs about £750/bike both ways, including luggage, no need to crate.
Do you think booking a day or so in advance would work, ie booking tomorrows accommodation today?

Yes taking the ferry from Denmark. It is a bit of a hike to get there. With the special deal of free bike if you stay in the Faroes its costing us £600 per bike and I have always wanted to visit the Faroes.

The day before is probably fine, but if I know a date I really want a hotel, say the night before a ferry then I would make a flexible booking, you can always cancel.

when are you going to be there we arrive on 30th July and leave on the 13th August

BTW I would check you can customs clear at the airport as its 1hr from the city. When we flew our bikes into Boston USA we had to go down to the port to get them cleared which was a huge surprise.

In my limited experience, accommodation in Iceland is relatively expensive but can be found in all of the towns. I you are venturing off the ring, there is a limited amount of hotel and hostel accommodation. If I had no camping equipment with me, I would definitely book ahead one night, maybe more.
