Map: Central highland 1:300 000

What is Iceland Overland?

Iceland Overland is written by a veteran of serious motorcycling, for adventure seeking motorcyclists. It’s the only planning and route guide for motorcyclists dealing with all aspects for your trip to Iceland, from the time you start preparing until leaving the island after an adventure tour on your bike.

Iceland Overland not only deals with local issues like guided tours, workshops, general paperwork, logistics, accommodation, riding conditions, communication and search and rescue, it also deals with more general issues for motorbikers going on an adventure tour, like riding on rough terrain, basic repair, first aid for motorbikers, crossing rivers, towing, spares, packing etc.

Information on more than fifty routes is to be found in Iceland Overland with information on the terrain, experience needed for the route, distance to fuel station, river crossings and accommodation, to name just few. GPS waypoints and maps support all the routes in the book.

More than seventy huts and lodges in the interior is listed, along with service provided, booking information and GPS coordinates.

Hi geokobbi,
I have tried to order your book and the map but it looks like to site will only deal with users in Iceland. I may be wrong but I could not get it to work. I live in the UK
I would still like to get the book and map, do you have a solution or alternative method.

Steve

Hi geokobbi,

I would also be interested in obtaining a copy of the same from within the UK.

Regards,

Simon

geokobbi 19 Jun 2005 22:17

Simon and Steve

People from outside Iceland should not have any problems ordering the book. We have had many orders from the mainland Europe and America already.

I know that users of Mizilla Firefox browsers have had some problems with on-line shoping, but users of Exporer have not had any problems.

Just try it again, and if you still have problems send me e-mail.

Maverick Bubble 8 Jul 2006 08:01

Jdivision. I e mailed them and told them of the problem. They told me I had to send my card details by return of email which i was uneasy about, but because it was a reccomendation from this site i took a chance.

If all goes well and i recieve the books and my card has not been abused i'll let you know.

Got the book and map a couple of weeks ago. Great stuff.

Edit: I sat down and plotted in the tables of gps positions in the book regarding accomodations. I hope that it's ok to post it here. (A couple of the positions sat in the big ocean(typo) so I've tried to fix them as good as I could)

(rename the .pdf to .zip, unpack .zip to get the .gpx)
I used the freely available mapsource map from here:
http://www.ourfootprints.de/gps/mapsource-island_e.html

utivera.is error meesages and Which Map?

Hi geokobbi

I have a comment and a question:

FYI: With reference to the error messages generated by utivera.is (as mentioned previously): I had cookies allowed and I was able to get the Guidebook into the Shopping Cart, but got 404-errors when trying to order a map. When I ignored the error message and hit the back button on my browser (Internet Explorer) and went to the Checkout, the map was there...:confused1:

Which map do you suggest is best out of:
"Map of the Central Higlands" for 890Kr or "Road Atlas" for 2490Kr.

I'm seriously planning to visit Iceland in July/August 2007 on my DRZ400.

Ride safely,
ChrisB

Best maps for Iceland

Chris

Here is a short summary of the available maps of Iceland. Generaly I would not recommend bikers to buy maps from Landmaelingar, but instead buy those from "Mál og Menning" (Edda publishing company). There is a very simple reason for this, there are more trails shown on the Mál og Menning maps.

* Map of the Central Higlands. (https://www.utivera.is/shopping/maps/)
Excellent map for those who don't like the tarmac (since the higlands has none). This map has the same roads and trails as the maps shown below, but there are gps coordinates on critical junctions. It is also very easy to plan your trip since you only have 1 sheet in front of you, instead of 4, or more.
* Quarternary travel maps (http://www.randburg.is/is/maps/4maps.html)
Those maps cover the whole island on 4 sheets. Those maps show the same roads and trails as the map of the Central Highlands, but you will not have GPS coordinates on critical junctions.
* Road Atlas (1:300 000) (http://www.randburg.is/is/maps/miscelmaps.html)
Same database is used for those maps as the quarternary maps. This is a coil binding type of book. Each sheet shows small part of the island, so foreigners might find it difficult to use the book for planing purposes. Carry the road atlas on the road, since it is small and should fit perfectly in your tank-bag.

Hope this short summary helps you guys.
