Iceland 2013 anyone?

Howdy,
planning on riding solo around Iceland next year.
Planning on taking my bike in the Ferry leaving Denmark, spending around a week or so, and then back in the boat.
Anyone hesitating to go that would be interested in joining for a Brew on board?
Any hints on local contacts, biker friendly clubs and/or spots would be welcome.

Safe rides.

Im quite intressted, the thing is i don't now if i can afford the ferry.
How much does it cost to take you and your bike back and forth? :thumbup1:

To ride across Iceland is a dream of mine :)

Sounds like a great idea. I'm thinking of going at the end of May next year. The ferry costs about 800 euros. I've got maps and routes and a lot of information.

Hi, I'm planning going, no dates yet as I'm working there then doing the trip.Been twice.I'm planning shipping my bike over, from UK/faroes/Iceland.What type of bike are you taking?
The main ring road has been completed and is now very good. You certainly don't need a trail bike , any road bike will do.
The main interior/gravel roads, last year were often washed out and the surface was very washboardred / rippled, making riding a shaky business!
I am looking to leave a bike there and am looking at customs/import regs.
I have friends there so I could store it.
Bike hire in Iceland is Very expensive.

Dave
You may be able to go from Scrabster or Aberdeen to Lerwick and get a Smyril ferry Iceland via Faroes, or if Smyril no longer stops at Lerwick get a ferry from Lerwick-Faroes. A lot of the ferry info on this route is out of date.

Smyril Ferry has discount for bikes. From Mainland Europe/Denmark.
Scroll down this link below for prices.

I'll be riding around in the highlands at that time for sure. Hit me up if you like, let's go for a ride. I don't have much experience but I'm getting to know people who do. Do ride Kjalvegur / Kjolur / Kjölur. It's majestic. Enormous fun to ride.

farmer palmer 10 Dec 2012 23:31

Well i could well be cycling in Iceland again in 2013.............Either that or it'll be Norway on the GS.

It's all too easy to book a flight from GLA-KEF for around £250 and the bike is only £30 if they remember to charge for it. Two hours and you're there and after that it's all good apart from the headwinds!

I can live on £30 per day including accomodation on a cycling trip, get fit and loose some weight aswell as getting a close look at the scenery........Slowly!

The only way to get to Iceland by ferry is from Denmark-Faroes-Iceland and since the Norrona doesn't stop in Shetland anymore it takes too long from Scotland as it's a long haul to Denmark before you start and costs a small fortune!

Now if only the Norrona was to stop at Lerwick again as it's passing i'd be buying a season ticket!

FP.

If it's good weather then the sprengisander crossing is great:funmeteryes:, 4 or 5 river crossings, good veiw of the glacier.
Me and Zebb will be travellin lateish June Over there for 3 or 4 weeks.
Also you have "Landsmot" at Hunaver (Bike Rally)

cyber-zebb 21 Mar 2013 01:39

YOU never said anything about RIVER CROSSINGS ye twat ,,,,, looks like it`s more stunt riding for me then! LOL :helpsmilie:bier

Bliss 7 May 2013 20:42

Thining very hard now to book a ferry, outbound from Denmark on 18th June.... :innocent:
Is 4 weeks not too long by any chance?

Bliss 15 May 2013 01:51

It is done!
Leaving Hirsthals on the 18th June!! :D

My plan is to do preferentially F-roads, gain experience at gravel, sand/ash and river-crossings, whilst thoroughly testing out my bike mods. BMW X-challenge.

This is, of course, inbetween awe-ing at scenery and soaking in volcanic pools...:Beach:

Get back to me if we can cooperate for parts of the trip!

cyber-zebb, Awesome Mawson??

Nice:thumbup1: Three digit F roads (Fxxx) are the best, try F910 and the old F910 after taking a bath in Askja.

See you on the ferry - A friend and I will also be going on the 18th
Hitting Denmark the 28th again so not too much time up there.
I'm on a F658, but friend is riding a FZS 600 so it will be mostly paved roads (this time)
(2014 is already in the planning phase :thumbup1:)
Regards, Martin
(I live in Denmark, just north of the German border, if you need a place to crash before heading to Hirtshals just let me know)

Tony LEE 24 May 2013 04:55

Catching the ferry on 18th June and will be there for about 9 weeks. Not on a bike though - our preferred method of transport is a Hobby motorhome.

This was our first night stop last time

For those who baulk at metre-deep river crossings, the F35 is a pretty good introduction to the centre of Iceland. Hot springs half way plus side trips to the two glaciers and lakes and waterfalls plus you go past Geisur (Spelling). Gravel road all the way.

Those are lovely shots you have there Tony, and I am a little jealous that you have got some a nice camper.....I am going to Iceland in July, but I will be camping.

I may struggle towing a caravan on my little motorbike.

Served my apprenticeship as far as owning motorbikes goes and now prefer some fancier creature comforts.

tamlane 16 Jun 2013 15:25

I'm in iceland :)
Hi all, I'm going to be in iceland from about August the 20th to September the 7th. I'm doing it as cheap as possible and camping most of the time. I plan to ride both the main interior crossing routes but I'm flexible when and where else I go. I'm looking for people who may want to ride with me. I'm on my trusty drz 400.

Let me know if your keen

Tam
