Getting tax back on leaving Iceland
 

At departure, go to customs and there is a small office/counter, for reclaiming the VAT back, you just fill out a small form and you get cash back! it can be quite a lot, but must be over a certain amount first, but that's easy to do in Iceland. We put all our expenses on one card, and kept the reciepts, got a pretty good wad of cash back when leaving.
Of course, also always buy lots of whisky/Brennivin at the duty free when entering, whisky is £50 /$100+ in Iceland and is a real treat for the natives jeiger

You can do that on the ship (Norrona) also. There's a customs officer before boarding who stamps your recipients and in the ship you fill out the form and get back the money. We forgot to get the stamp from the officer but it was no problem to get the money back .. I think you need the stamps though from a certain amount and up. - That was in 2010 btw.

I thought getting the tax back was a cool idea, especially as you did I think get a higher rebate for hand made wool items from some of the co-operatives. I seem to remember the info said you could get it back in many places, and some banks are listed as where you could. I asked in Akureyri airport, but was told that since the desk is in the departure hall you would have to be leaving the country from there to use that facility. I never ended up near a listed bank when it was open to ask.

So I was left to doing it on the ship on departure. Smyril line is of course based in the Faroes so deals in Danish Krone. I think they had a fee for processing it, and then the ships poor exchange rate from Icelandic Krona to Danish, and maybe a fee for the currency exchange too, I'm not sure!!

But it ended up rather than the approx £60 I was expecting it was £9 and a bit :(

Sorry for the vagueness, but if you can get a refund before getting on the ferry that is a very good idea!

I got the rebate at the airport, it was a tidy sum, can't remember how much I got as we spent it all on duty frees for the group. I think you have to get it from point of departure.

Well worth doing,lots more than £9. and Yes craft knitteds are good value, but avoid the thin machine made ones, get thick hand knits away from Reykjavik.

We were in a group spending about £60 each a night on food and drink and for a group of 5 over 2 weeks, incl gifts, fuel, etc it soon mounts up!

Unfortunately ships are a money-making prison.

I think you could get a voucher to redeem at your bank instead of cash.

Are you saying that receipts for items such as fuel and food and accommodation purchased and consumed entirely within Iceland can be submitted for refund of tax??

Stuff you buy in Iceland and take home with you, I can understand.
