finding a good map

Hello,

I'm planning a trip beginning next summer and for three weeks of it—give or take—I'll be in Iceland.

I'm finding it difficult to track down a decent map and although I've found a site by Stanford's of London that appears to have a good range, I am unsure as to which is the best one for my needs.

http://www.stanfords.co.uk/search.html?q=Iceland

I intend to be off the beaten track as much as possible but I am also aware that the roads across the interior of the island are seasonal. I located a regularly updated PDF that detailed seasonal road conditions however I lost the link and have been unable to find it again.

I will be leaving for the trip near the end of July.

If anyone is able to point me in the direction of a good map I would be very grateful!

Thank you!

Hey Cal.,

I've been to Iceland in may-june this year. I used Ferdakort touring maps, especially Ferdakort 1,2 and 3. They are detailed maps. They've been good enough for me.

About the road conditions, you need to see this website. It's the official Icelandic Road Administration. If you are riding in Iceland and you do not have access to the Internet just ask at a gasstation. They'll be able to look things up for you and maybe even print out a map.

Indestructable Map of Iceland

Hi Cal,

we are traveling wit the Island Map from Reise Know-How Verlag.
It has been sufficient enough for us (including riding some of the interior).
The best thing about the map is, that it is printed on special paper. Its totally waterproof, can be folded in whatever way you want and still doesn't rip apart.
For us these maps are the only ones we take since we found them. They don't get destroyed on the road :-)

It is also suitable for GPS navigation, but since we have none I don't know much about that.

Have a good trip to Iceland!
Cheers Patrick

Thanks for all the advice guys!

I'm going to order both the Riese and Ferdakort maps.

Pwyll, the Icelandic Road Administration site looks extremely helpful, so cheers for that!

Thanks again!

nice choice, Iceland is a marvelous country! I was there last summer and i had a really great time!
I used the aforementioned icelandic road administration site and an Iceland map from freytag and berndt. it is very detailed (it also covers the highlands smaller tracks :)), and it features a small map of Reykjavik city centre. the only small drawback is that the gravel road stratches aren't always where they are marked.

Iceland GPS Map Excellent

I downloaded the "static" GPS map of Iceland onto my low end Garmin GPS.
I taped it to the handlebars on a F650GS I rented in July.
It was perfect for navigating through the seasonal F roads.
Extremely detailed, but as a static map you can't have GPS route for you.
You see where you are on the map.

I had purchased a road map as backup but only used it for the large picture.

Iceland is a wonderful place in the summer to ride. Make sure you take F35 up the middle between the glaciers. You really can't get lost, but make sure you plan for gas stops or carry extra.

I rented from Biking Viking but there's also Blue Mountain.

I've just found out that nokia maps (used on some of their devices) now features a navigable GPS map :)
