Ferry Cost's?
 

We are traveling to Iceland in June as part of a European trip. We are trying to cut cost's as much as possible but the only Ferry option is with Smyril Line. We've been quoted 990 euro's return for two without any food etc in June.

This does seem really expensive!! Any ideas on how we could get there cheaper with the bike??

Sounds cheap. Not only are the prices I'm seeing on their website higher, but I've paid more than this on boats all over the place (most recently a 26 hour trip in Brazil for me and the bike with very primitive accommodation costing US$250, and a nicer trip from Colombia to Panama with the bike one way for US$750). You're looking at two bikes and two people round trip from Europe to Iceland including a stop in the Faroe Islands with a cabin? What were you hoping to pay?

Its just one bike and two people. The cabins are shared and compulsory. We desperately want to visit Iceland, but it seems expensive for a few weeks of the 3 month trip. We could almost live on that money for 1 month.

Just wondering if anyone had done it cheaper or knows of another option?

I just checked Hirstals-Iceland return for me and bike with a couchet and it was 685 Euro. So 990 for 2 with a cabin sounds about right.

Eimskip run a freight service from Immingham but I don't think it's any cheaper. eimskip.com

Thanks for the info both markharf & flyingdoctor. I think that the sensible decision is to skip iceland :( and head further north to the artic circlea before Russia and save the money from the ferry to enjoy the route and take our time....

You will miss a lot if you skip Iceland !!!! It's such a nice and quit country with lots of friendly people. The 990 euro isn't that expensive and absolutely worth it. You are already that close to Iceland........... it's more expensive from any other place.

just a shot in the dark, but when i use uk to ireland ferries and get quotes for uk to europe ferries, i always google looking for people posting promotional ferry codes, stena, irish ferries, p+o, it has worked for me, mostly 10% have got up to 20%.

Price Seems About Right But Iceland Is Worth It
 

The price seems a little high, but not by much. Perhaps it is a combination of 2 trips in high season and they may have raised their prices. We went this summer past (2010) and we paid 450 each, that was return with bike, so 900 in total for two people AND two motorcycles. But one way was in high season and the other was in low season. The food on board was also expensive, so you want to pack your own, or do what we did which was hit the breakfast buffet and then just have our own food for supper.

Having said that, Iceland was really amazing and worth it. I only wish we had more time there, we went for 4 weeks on the island and it was still not enough time. If you are going as part of a bigger trip maybe you want to wait and go when Iceland can be the entire trip.

Gypsyprincess- I think you may be right, it may be worth saving it for another trip on its own. We were only planning to stay for 10 days (3 of them on the the Faroe Islands). I'm a radio presenter by trade and have a few working commitments in Helsinki in July, and would like to fit in Nordkapp before we head to Russia.

Our Summer 2010 Iceland Budget
 

As part of a bigger trip Iceland is really expensive, and although I would say completely worth it, I think you would enjoy it more with more time. I still wish we had more time than the 4 weeks, 10 days will just not be enough! :-)

We saved a lot of money with the camping card, but for 10 days the camping card will just pay for itself. (We did wild camp, but not as much as we normally do). If your interested our budget for the whole trip is here:

We stayed within our 30 Euro a day budget even with an accident, but keep in mind Patrick is a Swabian and REALLY good at saving money. :-P

Sharing a container from Denmark
 

Hi, my name is Loftur and I'm Icelandic(in fact im half-icelandic, half swabian:)), although living in Denmark.

It seem that you have made up your mind, and are not coming to Iceland but I will say this anyway.

My plan is to take my bike to Iceland this summer and spend two months crisscrossing the island along with my girlfriend. I have looked at the prices and, yes they are steep. There is however another potential option. Many Icelanders move between Iceland and Denmark each year, each time renting a container for all their stuff. I some cases they don't manage to fill the containers, and therefore look for other people who need to transport stuff, to share cost. I think this could be a very viable option, and probably a lot cheaper.

I think 990 EUR is very expensive! I paid about 250EUR return with couchette accommodation a few years ago. I'm glad I went back then. For 990 EUR I would not go again.
I took the ferry from Scrabster, Scotland. Not sure if it's still taking this route?

It was also cheaper for me to use the German agent instead of the UK one.

We were thinking of taking our camper to Iceland this year, and were a bit surprised how much the cost seems to have risen compared to a few years ago.
We also had problems for the last week and a half getting the ferry companys website to work, many emails went unanswered. :(

But yesterday it did work, and we found the price had gone down 20% for the same dates since 10 days ago! Booked!!

Still expensive though!! Roughly it is the same cost per hour on board as Dover to Calais though, and includes a room with a view!

If we couldn't book this trip an alternative would have been Norway, but looking closer at this, the unobvious costs of so many tolls for so many tunnels, small ferries etc, again because of the weight and height of our camper, might have meant a 6000mile return trip costing more than Iceland will. So Norway may be on two wheels in the future!

As well as I believe because of either their economy and/or the volcano, its now a lot cheaper for me to be there compared to a few years ago.

So on balance not too bad for me now?

when I went in June 2010 i paid £1150.00 for me and a vw T4 from Denmark to Iceland and £70.00 Dover to Dunkirk.

I was more upset at the prices onboard the boat than the cost of the crossing!

How many days are you going for?

It might be cheaper to get a flight and hire a bike if only for a couple of days?

Circa 130E a day. I can get flights up there for about 130E so if less than 5 days, this would be the cheaper way I recon.

Having said that, it's not like riding your own steed, is it!!
