When is the best season to come by bike to Iceland?

Hi Mattias

July and August are the far best months for bikers.

June is sometimes okey, but the interior is most of the time closed due to snow and dirt.

Late August and September are good if you plan to do trails where big glacial rivers need to be crossed. In August most of the snow has melted from the glaciers, so the water in them is low.

Hello Geokobbi,

Thanks for the reply, I'll try coming an August then to take advantage of those conditions.
I've been hearing a lot good about Iceland for trail driving, but it is also the land of my ancestors, the vikings!
Is serious offroad authorised? I've heard rumours it's strictly forbidden for ecological reasons, which would be understood and respected.

Here are many reasons why OFF-ROAD riding/driving is not allowed:

1) there is not reason to go off-road since on the island are thousands of kilometers of trails, tracks and good gravel roads to ride/drive on.
2) It is not leagal.
3) Off you go off the beatten track you are not only spoiling the land itself you are also spoiling it for other travellers.
4) It takes tens of years for the surface to cure when you drive onto the sand plains.

The strict definition of road is "a hard surface built for vehicles to travel on". The routes I take when I go riding are not these typical roads that you use when going to work. I use trails, tracks and dirt roads. So in this sence I say, go off-road, but stay on the trails, tracks and dirt roads. If you don't follow these simple rules you will have to pay fine.

We have had few cases where tourists went wild up in the interior and drove like they were on a motocross track. They came to Iceland with the ferry and were stopped before departing the ferry on their way home. This is not like the continent where you can just ride away. Travellers are being stopped at ports for off-road riding/driving.

Yes, that is what I heard, driving on trails would be enough for me.
I'm now going to UK for a while, then I hope being able to visit Iceland in a few month, it would be interesting.
